GreatSchools Ratings and Reviews for Tech High School

Overall Quality: Extracurricular Activities:
Principal Leadership: Parent Involvement:
Teacher Quality: Safety and Discipline:
While I agree with the latest reviews, I must point out a major error in the April 17, 2011 posting. Teachers are not being let go because of low enrollment. Teachers have left in droves due to the new administration. Founding members of the school have left. Award-winning teachers have left. Many of these people left in the middle of the year as they could not stand what was happening to the school. The Foundation Board has chosen to ignore the fact that the MAJORITY of the original staff has already resigned. Tech High has wonderful students who are paying the price for an unprofessional, dishonest, narcissistic and ignorant administration.

The school is about to close to such such low student enrollment. 60 or more students did not return, many did not graduate. Their graduation numbers are like 5 years old. They have had to get rid of many qualified teachers and staff due to the low enrollment numbers because the school gets money for each student. The principal and CEO of the school both make close to $100,000 a year. They need to take a serious pay cut due to the poor results and spend the money on real technology. Last year they did not even have wifi. Ask the Atlanta Fire Marshall why the downstairs Engineering room was closed down. These students that are left need to look at Maynard Jackson High School, an up and coming top school.

All this school is doing this year is using it's limited resources to make sure the 11th graders pass tests to make AYP. In Georgia, a high school's AYP status is determined by the outcome of state test for the 11th graders only. So, all the focus is on the Juniors only. They only care about their status and not about the students. The principal and CEO Mr. Walker talk a good game only. Visit the school around 3:30 PM and see how these kids can barely cross the street because their trousers are sagging. See how the act in public. Tour the school unannounced to really see what is going on, if you are even considering it. We are leaving after this year to Maynard Jackson high school. They are starting an IB Program at Maynard Jackson

Tech high has a high rate of turn over amongst students. A good number of last years Freshman did not return based on the terrible experience. They got rid of the principal and hired a new one from Clayton County. Clayton County lost their state SACS accreditation and today SACS put Atlanta Public School's high schools on PROBATION. Failur seems to follow this current principal. Please ask leadership how Tech High made AYP last year. Ask them about the NCLB Safe Harbor provision. It was granted an exception, as it would NOT have made AYP per No Child Left Behind.

Horrible, Horrible, Horrible. There is not much left to say. Poor communication and no community involvement or support. Most students do not live anywhere near this campus designed for elementary age kids. A few do, but the majority are shuttled in or take Marta, so most parents never attend a PTA meeting or are involved.

Tech is a great school that is a true COMMUNITY. Where instead of upper classmens picking on the freshmen, they encourage them. Instead of accepting less they expect the best. From the Principal to the student - FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION!

I read some of the parent postings. I am a parent and very satisfied with Tech High. My daughter is also a 9th grader. It is not true that all students were put into a Math support class. Tech High does not have a support class at all. It's either Accelerated Math 1 or Math 1. The Principal has very high expectation from his teachers and students, and strives to do everything with his great team of teachers towards excellence. If that means putting your child in Accelerated Math 1, its because he believes each child has the capacity to reach that level. If a child does not work towards it and there is no support from parents, there is hardly anything a school, principal or teachers can do.

I think Tech High has been a great place for my daughter. She has good friends and doesn't have to deal with a lot of negative social pressure like she would if she were attending the neighborhood school. She has excellent teachers who really care and the administrative has always been available when I needed them. I hope more people will find out about this great school and take advantage of the opportunity.

I agree with some of the previous reviews that a lack of extracurricular activities are a problem. However, we have small classes and a truly nurturing environment. We really get to know the students in a way that is not always possible at a larger school. Tech has recently received a cultural enrichment grant and students have had the opportunity to travel to the High Museum, the Fox, the Alliance Theater, and other venues. We have students competing in poetry slams, singing in the talent show, playing basketball, cheering, building and competing with robots, etc. It's a great school, and I whole-heartedly enjoy teaching here.

Overall, Tech has been a really good experience for my sons. They have made good friends, never complained about safety and their grades have improved over time and they like their teachers. Tech High has a 5th block, M-Th, where students go to the class of thier choosing for extra help (study hall, i guess). This helped my sons a lot. I work full-time so I dont have a lot of time to spend at the school but I like to know what's going on. Some teachers called but most didnt. The main thing that I dont like about Tech is there are no extracurricular activities. They keep saying that they will implement this and that but I never see it happen. Good school for 9th and maybe 10th grade but it's time to get a real high school experience at 11 & 12.
