Engineering

AJAX Rockstar: Commerce; Seattle

Redfin seeks to hire a rock-star AJAX programmer for its downtown Seattle office, where we are developing the industry's most efficient and controversial online home buying and selling experience.

Redfin's commerce team is led by engineers from Amazon and Microsoft working to build the industry's first self-service application for all the stages of the home buying and selling process. This application is the core technology behind Redfin's ability to deliver better customer service at lower per transaction cost.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Raw coding skills: we'll look for a strong academic background in computer science or a related technical field; in the interview, you'll be given plenty of coding challenges so we can really see you think;
  • A history of driving ambitious projects to completion, preferably at a startup: we'll look for key contributions to teams working on strategic projects;
  • Lots of ideas: we'll ask you how you would improve Redfin's wizards for making offers and listing properties;
  • An instinct for building customer-driven applications, and a curious, analytical mind: so you can work with product management to fix problems that discourage would-be customers or hamper agent productivity. At a company our size, the engineers have to live and breathe the business problems faced by our customers and agents;
  • The intellectual range to be able build an application from the database schema up to the user interface, with knowledge of Java and SQL as well as JavaScript, CSS, MVC, HTML and JSP.

What you'll get from us:

  • The chance to build a user experience from the ground up;
  • The support and resources to learn always;
  • A young, brilliant team with which to collaborate;
  • An office in downtown Seattle, close to all the action;
  • A commitment to your career, so you can grow with the company.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science.

Senior Software Development Engineer: Commerce; Seattle

Redfin seeks to hire a senior software engineer for its downtown Seattle office, where we are developing the industry's most powerful application for buying and selling homes.

Redfin's commerce team is led by engineers from Amazon and Microsoft working on a system that will process billions of dollars in real estate transactions. Because the self-service technology can drive customer satisfaction at better margins, it is fundamental to how we make real estate better.

The engineer on this project will work across all three layers of our system from the user interface to the application logic and the database. We use AJAX client technologies, Java, Apache, Hibernate and Postgres. How much experience you have or what programming languages you know are less important than:

Software Development Engineer in Test: Query and Statistics; San Francisco

Engineers in our test team work on the widest range of technologies in Redfin's business and have strategic impact, using advanced techniques for assessing scalability, performance and quality. Projects include data acquisition, search, data mining, AJAX user interface and test frameworks.

As the final arbiter of what services we release to our customers, test engineers are involved with every phase of product development, from design to support, with significant exposure to the business requirements behind every new release of our website. The best test engineers are also contrarians, people who think for themselves, trust only what they can measure and always see how things could break or improve. They are wicked-fast learners, who love new challenges, and aren't put off by complexity. And, of course, they are able to put themselves in the customer's shoes.

What makes Redfin a special place to work in testing is our unique commitment to the role: many of our best engineers are focused on quality, building tools and automation for exhaustively characterizing the entire code-base; the quality team influences the design of every feature we bring to market, sets the standard for engineering best practices, and informs major product decisions.

The ideal candidate will be able to:

  • Review product designs to ensure a high-quality customer experience;
  • Develop automated acceptance and functional tests;
  • Analyze data to understand usage patterns and performance bottlenecks;
  • Own feature areas in any or all three tiers: web intervace, server, and database.

You'll succeed if you have:

  • The ability to design, understand, break, develop, and fix code (specific knowledge of Java and SQL a plus!);
  • Strong analytical capabilities;
  • Passion, and are committed to quality in engineering and productivity.

Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science or related technical field.
