If you thought castle construction stopped in the Middle Ages, you’d be wrong. In the western Chicagoland suburb of Oak Brook, Illinois, a castle built in 2009 is on the market for $4.2M.

Yes, you read that right: a castle. From the fountain and formal garden in the front yard to the 18-inch-thick stone and brick walls, it’s a well-fortified 12,000 square-foot residence complete with an elaborate grand entry way, a medieval-looking wine cellar and period-appropriate chandeliers.

This castle is far from the most costly dwelling in town; there are currently eight listings more expensive in Oak Brook, though only this one would have a new owner interested in adding a moat. As a whole, the suburb’s median sale price is $595,000, according to Redfin’s latest market tracker, so buyers would still definitely live like royalty.

Among the home’s many features: a billiards room, a master bathroom the size of an abbey and imported wrought-iron railings. For green consumers, there’s radiant heating through the floors, to keep regal toes toasty. Oh, and a home theater may be anachronistic, but Charlemagne would’ve watched TV if he could’ve, right? Well, he’d have one if he bought this Oak Brook castle.

Also, Medieval Times fans may want to ask about the chainmail and sword in the recessed arches in the great hall – the home has been on-and-off the market since 2009, so the seller may very well include them in the deal!
