With March basketball now in full swing, announcers frequently remind us that “the loser goes home.” In this case, is that a bad thing?
Looking at the houses of Cuonzo Martin, head coach of the University of California, and Shaka Smart, head coach of the University of Texas, an early exit might be a blessing in disguise! More time in their luxurious, spacious digs…
In honor of the tournament, Redfin decided to stage a fan vote of the four best coaches houses we could find – vote today and make sure to check out (and vote in) yesterday’s post (#4 Jay Wright vs. #1 Jim Larrañaga) to help us decide which two coaches advance to the finals.
#3 Seed: Cuonzo Martin, University of California

This a strong entry; many commentators see Martin poised to make the upset. The beautiful coral-colored stucco, the exposed wooden beams and the location in calm-and-residential Piedmont amidst the Bay Area make the house a real oasis for Coach Martin. He bought it in 2014 for a cool $2.5M; a view like that doesn’t come cheap!
And, according to the Redfin Estimate, the home value has increased to $2.64 million in two short years. Good play, coach!
#2 Seed: Shaka Smart, University of Texas

For fans of high ceilings, abundant natural light and outdoor reflection pools, this Shaka Smart’s house in Austin is hard to beat! Five bedrooms and 7.5 bathrooms means there’s space a-plenty for everyone. Like Martin, Shaka Smart paid $2.5M for his home, but the Redfin Estimate has its value up to $2.89 million in just under a year. Is that reason enough for coach Smart to advance to the finals?
