The Washington Post is reporting that the Obama family purchased the home they’ve been renting for $8.1 million. The home is located in Kalorama, a neighborhood noted for its historical residences and embassies. The Obamas’ neighbors include Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who bought this property earlier this year. Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner are reportedly renting a home in the neighborhood.

“Kalorama is once again the premier destination for the political elite because it follows the mantra of real estate agents: ‘location, location, location!’,” said Redfin Washington D.C. agent Steve Cantrella. “Kalorama offers a certain level of exclusivity, being flanked by Dupont Circle and Embassy Row, as well as proximity to the corridors of power like K-Street and the White House. Historically, it has been the home of Presidents Woodrow Wilson, William Taft, FDR, Warren Harding and Herbert Hoover.”

This sale adds to the list of high-value luxury home sales taking place in Washington, D.C. this year as the one Administration transitioned out and the new Administration took over.

The Obamas have said they plan to remain in D.C. while their younger daughter, Sasha, finishes high school at Sidwell Friends. After leaving the White House in January, the family rented the home that was last sold in 2014 for about $5.3M. It’ll be interesting to see the ‘presidential premium’ put on the home once the Obamas decide to put their newest asset on the market. Whenever that time comes, a Redfin agent will be more than happy to help them sell their historic home.
