There’s something serene about walking onto your front porch or back patio with a glass of wine and a good book and perching yourself atop a pretty swing. Between the soothing swaying, beautiful design and nostalgic feel, there aren’t many things you need outside of that little moment.

Porch swings have made a major comeback in recent years, with many styles skewing toward more contemporary silhouettes and colors. Traditional porch and patio swings are still plenty popular. They’re even being added to more modern homes to give them a classic vibe. A porch swing is the perfect way to ensure your home is prepped and ready for the dog days of summer. Here are a few of our favorite ways to implement this swinging seat into your home’s front or backyard design.

Delightful Daybed

Take the comfort level one step further by converting your porch swing to a daybed complete with a fitted mattress, throw blankets and plenty of pillows. Create a bohemian getaway with natural textures and tonal colors like beige and off-white, or add a bolt of color with more traditional tones of red and blue. A daybed is the perfect way to add a cozy element to a small garden area, back porch overlooking a pool or front patio with a picturesque view of tree-lined streets.

Sweet Country Swing

There’s a reason that porch swings have such a calming, nostalgic feel to them. Sitting on a porch swing evokes visions of a grassy yard, a picket fence and a pretty porch wrapped around a Colonial home. This scene offers a comforting retreat after a long day of work or a particularly warm evening. Create a countryside feel by adding a porch swing to your front yard landscape, including a bistro table for lunchtime and an outdoor rug for comfort underfoot for when you finally decide to get up.

A Modern Solution

Porch swings aren’t only for the traditionalist! Contemporary homeowners can find a swinging solution with more modern silhouettes, sleek finishes and interesting use of materials. Instead of a wooden or wicker bench seat, consider a more contemporary finish like acrylic or plastic. These materials are sturdy and have an up-to-the-minute look to them. If you’d still like to use wicker, select a silhouette that has an interesting woven pattern, color or stitch to it. Add pops of color with plush pillows and throw blankets, and don’t forget to pile on the pattern for added dimension.
