As much of the East Coast continues digging out the snow from Winter Storm Jonas, we should ask ourselves, was I prepared? Taking action to prepare for the next storm may be one of the most important decisions you make all year. Knowing what to do now, can help ensure your safety later.

Stay Informed

Download the FEMA app on to your mobile device, which will provide you with access to a number of useful tools. Receive severe weather alerts from the National Weather Service; save a custom list of the items in your family’s emergency kit; locate and receive driving directions to open shelters and disaster recovery centers; and find safety tips on how to stay safe before, during, and after over 20 types of hazards, such as floods and hurricanes. Also, be sure to tune in to local news and weather reports, which can be your first line of defense against dangerous winter storms. Additionally, a NWS NOAA Weather Radio provides alerts and warnings directly to your home, and can be found online or at retail outlets near you.

Have a Plan

Develop a family emergency communications plan now to save you the worry of not being able to contact your loved ones in an emergency. Don’t forget to post a copy in a central location in your home, such as your refrigerator or family bulletin board. Some easy ways to get started are setting up group text lists and social media messaging groups, as well as selecting an out-of-town contact as a trusted resource to help you and your family members reconnect. Stock up on Emergency Supplies

What you store will depend on your individual and family needs, but remember you may be without power and heat for several days. Have a family discussion and think through what three days without power, water, or heat would feel like. Gather the basic supplies your family would need if grocery stores and other services are unavailable; if power, water, and gas is interrupted; or if you cannot leave your home. Finally, there are a few things that you should never do that you should keep in mind.

  • NEVER use a generator, camp stove, charcoal grill, or gasoline or propane heater while indoors. You are putting you and your family at risk for carbon monoxide poisoning!
  • NEVER go outside without proper warm clothing that stays dry.
  • NEVER turn on your car before removing snow and ice from your vehicle’s tailpipe.
  • NEVER overexert yourself when clearing and shoveling snow.

Stay safe and warm, because when the sky turns gray, the next storm could be on its way!
