Tips for Moving to Chicago’s Ukrainian Village

If Chicago, Illinois wasn’t already the city to live in, Redfin’s hottest neighborhood, the Ukrainian Village, gives us just another reason to head to the Windy City. Before you pack up and make your move toward these tree-lined city streets, brush up on these moving tips!

Moving Tips

Planning

Check with your local alderman’s office as soon as you have your moving date. If needed, you can apply for a temporary reserved parking spot in front of your building.  Also, try to avoid moving during a major city activity, such as a sporting event, as roads will be busy.  You may want to reserve a parking spot ahead of time, as parking is scarce in the city.

Storage

Living in a busy city typically means less space. If you feel your living arrangements don’t allow you to store off-season items at home, you can opt for storage. Find the right storage unit for you, using this size guide.

College

Multiple colleges are located in the area such as the Illinois Institute of Art, Computer Training Source, and Resurrection University.  Before you move, check university schedules – try not to move when college students are moving because they will most likely utilize most of the moving trucks, trailers and equipment in the area.

Weather

The climate of the Ukrainian Village has four distinct seasons—wet and chilly springs, relatively warm summers, enjoyable autumns, and very cold winters.  Summer days tend to have moderately high humidity levels, and winter temperatures can drop below freezing.  While you’ll probably enjoy this array of weather, your belongings may not.

Climate controlled storage units are something to consider when you have precious items such as wooden furniture, leather, and collectibles.

Your New Neighborhood

Settling In

Once the moving and unpacking is done, the best part of the new city is getting to enjoy it! Chicago’s Ukrainian Village is the next up-and-coming neighborhood. The historic houses have 1880s style worker cottages that are in the center of the Chicago Landmark District. This neighborhood has amazing dive bars and local restaurants that are sure to impress your taste buds.  The Illinois Medical Districts is also just to the north.

Getting Around

One of the benefits of living in the Ukrainian Village is the close proximity to entertainment and necessities.  If you would like to grab a bite to eat, go shopping or hear live music, chances are you won’t have to travel far.

  • Walking: the Village has a Walk Score of 94, making it the 7th most walkable neighborhood in Chicago.
  • Bicycling: Ukrainian Village also has a Bike Score of 90, so a bicycle should do the trick if you’re running late that day or have a little farther to travel.
  • Public Transit: If you are not a walker or a biker, there is also public transportation in the form of buses and trains called the “L.”
  • Car Sharing: Though you probably won’t need a car for most things in the city, companies like U-Haul offer car sharing for those occasional visits across town.
