But sometimes, too much stimuli during an activity can lead to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nspt4kids.com\/healthtopics-and-conditions-database\/sensory-overload\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overstimulation, or sensory overload,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which might cause outbursts, tantrums, anxiety and even panic in your child. When a child is overwhelmed by more experiences, sensations, noise and activity than they can handle, overstimulation occurs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensory overload can be a big challenge for <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikihow.com\/Calm-an-Autistic-Child\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">special needs children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but in reality, all children deal with this, especially in our culture that is constantly pulsing with lights, sounds and smells that can overwhelm the senses. For example, an infant might seem uncomfortable or unable to settle down after a party where they have been held and cooed at by lots of adults. A toddler might have a tantrum after a big event like a trip to the zoo. An older child might be cranky if too much is packed into their day, like school, after-school care and then a music lesson. The first sign of an overstimulated child is tiredness, but with the inability to settle down and rest. When this happens, they need <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/asensorylife.com\/sensory-meltdowns.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dedicated quiet time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> associated with a familiar, calm environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>What does an overstimulated child look like? <\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"media-59128\" class=\"align-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/safespace2.jpg\" alt=\"safespace2\" \/><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/en\/scream-child-girl-people-kid-1819736\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo by Pixabay<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensory overload can present itself in different ways for different children. While one child might completely shut down, another child may grow restless, angry or even aggressive. Yet another child may catapult himself or herself all over the place, trying to get rid of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/themighty.com\/2016\/12\/how-to-calm-sensory-overload\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some of that excess stimulation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Other children are so distraught and uncomfortable that they just start crying uncontrollably. Regardless of how sensory overload manifests itself, it can cause an overwhelming amount of chaos for everyone involved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If an infant or child is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebump.com\/a\/overstimulated-baby-signs\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experiencing sensory overload<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he or she might:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Act cranky or fussy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cry more than usual<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turn their head away from you or push you away<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wave their arms and jerk their legs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be unable to use words to describe their feelings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Act frustrated or throw themselves on the ground<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refuse to do simple things or things they usually enjoy<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>How can we deal with sensory overload?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key is to try your best to balance activity and quiet, and action and rest. Doctors say that a child\u2019s brain <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nancyguberti.com\/5-stages-of-human-brain-development\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">develops faster<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the first five years than any other time in life. That\u2019s partly what\u2019s causing the overload \u2014 all of these experiences are supposed to stimulate the brain, allowing neurons to make millions of meaningful connections.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"media-59130\" class=\"align-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/safespace3.jpg\" alt=\"safespace3\" \/><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/en\/baby-kid-child-boy-reading-book-2598005\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo by Pixabay<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why a stimulating environment is a good thing \u2014 give your child <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/earnestparenting.com\/2012\/04\/09\/create-a-stimulating-environment-for-your-child\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lots of ways to play<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, learn, and practice to get ready to survive in the world. Make their bedroom or playroom a place that is warm and welcoming, with lots of interesting colors that stimulate the imagination. But that doesn\u2019t mean stimulation should cover the floor and the ceiling, or that you have to pack your child\u2019s schedule with dozens of extracurricular activities. Babies and young children also need down time \u2014 just like adults.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are three tips to help you strike a balance of both stimulating and soothing:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Tip #1: Create a Calm Space<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some children are very tactile, so a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/afineparent.com\/positive-parenting-faq\/calm-down-corner.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calm space<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a warm, cozy blanket or pillow can be quite soothing. The feeling of security can override the overwhelming feeling of being out of control. Something as simple as a soft blanket \u2014 one the child enjoys snuggling in to watch movies or read with mom and dad \u2014 can become that calm center of security. You can hold your child in your lap and hug them gently, or give them space to calm down. Wrap them gently in their blanket, and when they\u2019re ready to talk, let them choose the topic. They can <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.parenting.com\/article\/talking-down-tantrums\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">talk about their feelings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but only if they want to \u2014 they shouldn\u2019t be forced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Tip #2: Guided Imagery<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way to help calm a child down after overstimulation is to spend five minutes going through a guided imagery exercise.This is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themindfulword.org\/2012\/guided-imagery-scripts-children-anxiety-stress\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relaxation strategy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where a facilitator provides suggestions about a body part to focus on relaxing. It typically begins with your child doing some deep breathing. It helps if you put his or her hand on your chest and practice this breathing technique where they can feel it. Next, move up the body, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.turnaroundanxiety.com\/help-child-relax\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relaxing specific parts in order<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 \u00a0feet, calves, knees, thighs, chest, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, neck and face. \u00a0Getting your child to focus can help them relax more fully and completely, which is really helpful when trying to coax a child to bed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Tip #3: Calm Time vs. Time Out<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes when an overstimulated child gets out of control, maybe even violent, the safest thing to do is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysleepsite.com\/toddlers\/how-to-handle-your-toddlers-temper-tantrums\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">get them in their room<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s important that this is not seen as a consequence or a punishment, but as a \u201ccalm out,\u201d a place where they can go and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babycenter.com\/0_baby-sleep-training-cry-it-out-methods_1497112.bc\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">release all their emotions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> until they calm themselves down. Don\u2019t put a time limit on how long they have to stay there and let them do whatever they need to (within reason) to calm down. Monitor their behavior to make sure they do not injure themselves or damage items in the room, and make sure they know they must clean up whatever mess they may have made. Some parents help with the clean-up as a way to bond and show compassion after the incident. During this time, you can talk about what happened. Time-out is so often seen as a punishment, so it\u2019s important to frame the situation as a time to think about things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>What are some quick tips for preventing overstimulation?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First and foremost, try to stay calm yourself. Your child will feed off of your emotions, so if you stay calm, they will likely relax more quickly. Other ways you can help prevent sensory overload and de-escalate a situation include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take scheduled breaks away from noise and activity. Put on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.livestrong.com\/article\/488690-excessive-stimulation-in-children\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some soft music<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and let them spend time helping you with a task to encourage focus and winding down.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help your child describe how he or she is feeling instead of expressing it by acting out. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose a calming activity that you do together, like reading a book, lying down together, singing soothing songs or gently rubbing their back. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.growingkindminds.com\/blog\/changing-the-environment-not-the-behavior-5-great-ways-to-support-children-experiencing-autism\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change the environment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If a child is overstimulated at a park or a party, go for a walk. If a trip to the mall is causing an outburst, go outside or back to the car.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"media-59131\" class=\"align-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/safespace.jpg\" alt=\"safespace\" \/><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/en\/water-fight-children-water-play-442257\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo by Pixabay<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When children reach school-age, they should be able to begin calming themselves down. However, they will still need your guidance:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encourage your child to go to a quiet place to relax from overdoing it. Reclining in a chair in a quiet room with a softly-colored picture book and a comfy blanket is a good start.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let your child know it\u2019s OK to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/parents\/expert-tips-advice\/2015\/11\/teaching-children-its-ok-to-fail\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">let some activities go<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if they\u2019re overwhelmed. Help them decide which activity isn\u2019t as enjoyable or rewarding. Make sure they understand that taking a break isn\u2019t a failure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explore some <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/leftbrainbuddha.com\/10-ways-teach-mindfulness-to-kids\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mindfulness strategies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with your child. Creating a calm space in your house, one the whole family can use to cope with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.understood.org\/en\/learning-attention-issues\/child-learning-disabilities\/sensory-processing-issues\/the-difference-between-tantrums-and-sensory-meltdowns\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stress and sensory overload<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a great way to create healthy, mindful habits that benefit everyone.
