This is called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/Public-Education\/Fire-causes-and-risks\/Wildfire\/Preparing-homes-for-wildfire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Home Ignition Zone (HIZ)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is broken up into three subsections ranging from 0-200 feet away from your house. Here\u2019s a quick <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/projects\/fireproof-your-house-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breakdown of the zones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Immediate zone (0-5 feet)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The immediate zone is the area directly adjacent to your home, including the structure itself and its immediate surroundings. <\/span><b>This is the most important zone to take immediate action on<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Make sure to clear your house first and then work your way around your property. The goal of this zone is to eliminate fire risk as completely as possible.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep this zone free of all flammable vegetation and materials, especially anything underneath decks and between cracks in patios. Update your landscaping\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Landscaping plays a crucial role in preparing for a wildfire, especially in areas prone to wildfires, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/county\/338\/CA\/San-Bernardino-County\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"exclude\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Bernardino<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/county\/335\/CA\/Riverside-County\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"exclude\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Riverside<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> counties. Here are a few suggestions.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Plant selection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Opt for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/Internet\/FSE_DOCUMENTS\/fsbdev3_035872.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fire-resistant plants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnr.wa.gov\/publications\/rp_fire_resistant_plants_guide_easternwa.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">native to your region<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These plants typically have a high moisture content, are low-growing, and don&#8217;t accumulate dead branches or leaves. Examples include succulents, some species of rockrose, lavender, and yarrow. Avoid plants that produce resins, oils, or waxes, as they can be highly flammable.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hardscaping<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Use hardscaping elements like stone walls, pavers, concrete pathways, and patios to create firebreaks in your yard. These non-flammable elements can act as barriers, slowing or stopping the progress of a fire, and are great elements to add to your intermediate zone.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Water features<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Water features aren\u2019t viable for every home, especially if you live in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/guides\/climate-change-housing-impact\/drought-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"exclude\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drought-ridden region<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, if you are able to install them, consider ponds, streams, fountains, or even birdbaths. These can act as barriers to wildfires and can be a water source for firefighting if needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Yard equipment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Avoid storing equipment with fuel still in the tank, such as lawnmowers, chainsaws, leaf blowers, and other gas-powered tools.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Use fire-resistant building materials<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can retrofit your home to prepare it for a wildfire, but installing fire-resistant materials at the outset is much <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/07\/28\/1114242871\/fireproofing-your-home-isnt-very-expensive-but-few-states-require-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more cost-effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of when you fireproof your home, it\u2019s important to note the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/sfm.dps.louisiana.gov\/doc_flamespread.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flame Spread Index<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which measures how far and how fast flames spread across the surface of a material. There are three ratings from best to worst: Class 1 (A), Class 2 (B), and Class 3 (C). Ideally, most of your home would exclusively contain materials in the Class 1 and 2 categories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure you never use non-treated materials, especially not fiberboard, hardboard, and plywood. Additionally, some types of wood are more flammable than others, such as pine, oak, and douglas fir. Here\u2019s a list of essential <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/blog\/building-a-fireproof-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"exclude\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fire-resistant building materials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to consider.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Roofing and siding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Metal sheeting, fiber cement, slate tiles, fiberglass-based asphalt shingles, and brick and stone. Brick and metal are some of the most fire-resistant materials commonly available.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Decking and framing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Composite wood, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sips.org\/what-are-sips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, aerated concrete, steel, and Fire-Retardant Treated (FRT) wood. You can treat wood <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfire.us\/frt-applied-onsite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after installation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as purchase pre-treated wood.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Windows and doors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Insulated, double pane, tempered glass windows; steel; fiber-cement; and fire-rated wooden doors. Fire-rated doors have cores that can limit fire and smoke for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdfdistributors.com\/fire-rated-wood-doors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up to three hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, although 20 minutes is the most common. If you have a garage door, metal is the best choice.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Insulation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Fiberglass, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/energysaver\/radiant-barriers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">radiant\/reflective barriers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, foam, and mineral wool. There are many types of wool to choose from, including glass, rock, and slag. Once in place, these forms are filled with concrete, creating a solid, insulated wall system. ICFs are extremely energy efficient, durable, and resistant to various natural disasters, including wildfires.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ICFs have unique properties that can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.calpoly.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1388&amp;context=cmsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">withstand wildfires<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for up to four hours. While a bit more expensive than traditional wood, if you\u2019re building a new home, ICF may be the most fire-safe option.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Install fire alarms and monitors<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your next step should be to know when a fire is happening in your home. In the case of a wildfire, you\u2019ll likely know when it\u2019s coming, but it\u2019s still useful to install alarms and protection, so you can help limit the spread to other homes. And without fire detection, you are at increased risk of harm and damage to your home.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Smoke detectors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Smoke detectors are legally required. Ensure you have working detectors in every room of your home, test them monthly, and replace batteries annually.
