The rule went into effect on August 1, 2023, but has been in the works <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/mercury\/how-energy-independence-and-security-act-2007-affects-light-bulbs\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">since 2007<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The European Union <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2012\/aug\/31\/lightbulbs-incandescent-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passed a similar law in 2012<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because most light bulbs other than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/energysaver\/led-lighting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> don\u2019t meet these standards, this rule bans all inefficient light bulbs, including incandescents<\/span><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Businesses can no longer sell inefficient bulbs after August 1,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and manufacturers haven\u2019t been allowed to produce inefficient bulbs since <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-05\/GSL%20Backstop%20Enforcement%20Webinar%20May%204%202022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">January 1, 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consumers likely won\u2019t see a difference in product selection, however; most retailers have been taking inefficient bulbs off of shelves for a year in anticipation of this ruling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why did the government ban incandescent light bulbs?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DOE passed this ruling to help reduce the country\u2019s carbon emissions. Importantly, this isn\u2019t an outright ban on incandescent lights, and some specific ones are exempt, such as those in vehicles, appliances, traffic signals, and emergency lighting. However, all other new incandescents (including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bulbs.com\/learning\/halogen.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">halogen lights<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) will become illegal to sell and purchase if they don\u2019t meet the new efficiency standards. Many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energystar.gov\/products\/lighting_fans\/light_bulbs\/learn_about_cfls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compact fluorescent lights<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> technically meet the new standards, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/home\/kitchen-and-household\/are-compact-fluorescent-lightbulbs-being-banned\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will also be outlawed soon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joel Worthington, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mrelectric.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr. Electric<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.neighborly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neighborly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> company, notes that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the government is phasing out incandescent light bulbs because they are very inefficient. \u201cThey only convert about 10% of the energy they use into light,\u201d he says. \u201cThe rest of the energy is wasted as heat.\u201d In addition to being inefficient, incandescent light bulbs also have a relatively short lifespan; most only last <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelightbulb.co.uk\/resources\/light_bulb_average_rated_life_time_hours\/#:~:text=How%20long%20do%20light%20bulbs,to%20upwards%20of%2020%2C000%20hours.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about 1,000 hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By contrast, LED light bulbs usually last <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/greenlighting.co.uk\/the-lifespan-of-an-led-bulb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well over 10 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/why-led-bulbs-dont-always-live-up-to-the-hype-about-their-life-spans-11633080602\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">few outliers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). They\u2019re also extremely efficient, converting up to 90% of the energy they use into light. This means it will be very difficult to find new incandescent and halogen light bulbs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t have to destroy your inefficient light bulbs, though. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As your incandescent light bulbs go out, you can replace them with energy-efficient bulbs,\u201d notes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joel Worthington<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you have a backstock at home, you can continue installing and using them until you run out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What the incandescent ban means for homeowners<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transitioning from incandescents to LEDs is good for everyone. It helps save you money, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/blog\/how-to-reduce-your-carbon-footprint-at-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"exclude\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower your carbon footprint<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and reduce unnecessary waste. In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=51858\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly half<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of US households already primarily use LEDs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new ruling doesn\u2019t mean you have to test and get rid of your inefficient light bulbs immediately. \u201cIt simply means that when they burn out and when your supply runs out, you will have to find a more efficient replacement, most likely an LED,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joel Worthington<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LEDs last up to 30 times longer than incandescent lighting, you won\u2019t have to replace them nearly as often.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This decision matters most for those with lower incomes, who generally spend a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/sites\/prod\/files\/2019\/01\/f58\/WIP-Energy-Burden_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">larger percentage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of their income on utility bills. Incandescent lights are cheap but inefficient, and are often the only option in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/23\/climate\/led-light-bulbs-dollar-store.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">budget stores<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This leads to higher electric bills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily, LEDs\u00a0 have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/216351\/price-of-warm-white-led-lamps-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropping in price<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for years. And with new rules, they will likely decrease even more. making them more accessible and helping reduce electricity costs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/energy-equity-and-environmental-justice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for everyone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will switching to LEDs affect your home?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you primarily use incandescent light bulbs, you may be worried about how switching to LEDs will affect your home\u2019s aesthetic. Luckily, Joel has some good news: \u201cThe regulation exempts a few specific incandescent bulbs that you may have around your home, such as chandelier bulbs, grow lights (for gardening), and holiday lights,\u201d he says. \u201cYes, your holiday lighting is safe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the large majority of bulbs, though, you will have to switch to an efficient option when your current bulbs go out, most likely LEDs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people prefer incandescent lighting because of the quality of light it produces. The DOE <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/biden-harris-administration-proposes-raising-efficiency-standard-light-bulbs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently proposed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> significantly higher efficiency standards, pushing the requirement to 120 lumens per watt. This would essentially phase out every option except LEDs, including fluorescents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DOE is also considering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/doe-proposes-new-standards-residential-appliances-save-americans-billions-annual-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new efficiency standards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for other types of appliances, such as refrigerators, dishwashers, and washing machines. These standards are designed to help consumers save energy and money, and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note that the DOE is not the only organization that is working on energy efficiency standards. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/statelocalenergy\/energy-and-environment-guide-action-chapter-44-state-appliance-efficiency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also sets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> energy efficiency standards for appliances, such as through the ENERGY STAR program. In addition, many states and local governments have their own energy efficiency standards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The future of energy efficiency standards is uncertain, but it\u2019s clear that the trend is towards more stringent standards.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As of August 1, you can no longer purchase light bulbs that produce fewer than 45 lumens per watt. This effectively phases out all incandescent light bulbs in favor of LEDs.
