They can happen throughout the state, but they\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kgw.com\/article\/news\/local\/wildfire\/oregon-wildfire-risk-hazard-map-odf-osu\/283-bf83decf-ad83-4ea1-be57-3f9e2eed3cab\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more common<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the eastern and western slopes of the Cascades, in the far east, and the southwest. Fires impact homeowners, too; according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/riskfactor.com\/state\/oregon\/41_fsid\/fire\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data from First Street Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 1.2 million properties (66%) are at risk of being affected by a wildfire in the next 30 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The state&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/wildfires\/2023\/05\/oregon-officials-make-predictions-about-2023-wildfire-season.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fire season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is typically from June to September, but varies depending on snowpack, rainfall, and temperatures. Additionally, fires reduce tree cover, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2200333119\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impacting snowpack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and exacerbating drought, creating a cyclical pattern.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to prepare for wildfires in Oregon<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re moving to Oregon or already call the state home, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/blog\/how-to-prepare-for-a-wildfire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"exclude\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preparing for wildfires<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is essential. First Street Foundation estimates that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/riskfactor.com\/state\/oregon\/41_fsid\/heat\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.8 million properties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (66% of the population) are at some level of heat risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the state doesn\u2019t experience very many \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/safety\/heat-ww\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dangerous<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d heat days, temperatures have frequently risen beyond the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/help.riskfactor.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/7947907047063-Heat-Factor-Terminology\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local Hot Day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d mark, meaning they were hotter than 98% of days that year. Heat waves can push temperatures even further to well over 100 degrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heat waves in Oregon are particularly dangerous because many <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people don\u2019t have air conditioning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This was evident during the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonencyclopedia.org\/articles\/heat-dome-2021\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">record-breaking heat wave in June 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where temperatures in Portland exceeded 100 degrees for three days in a row, topping out at 116 degree<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average temperatures are also rising in Oregon, along with most of the US. Oregon\u2019s average temperature has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/energyinfo.oregon.gov\/blog\/2023\/1\/11\/occris-sixth-climate-assessment-outlines-climate-change-effects-on-oregon\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased by 2.2 degrees Fahrenheit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since 1895, and will increase by 5 degrees by 1950 and 8.2 degrees by 2080.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oregon is also susceptible to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/feature-story\/large-marine-heatwave-reaches-oregon-and-washington-coasts\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marine heat waves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can also cause additional heat-related effects on the land, especially during El Ni\u00f1o years (when the tropical Pacific Ocean is warmer.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to prepare for heat waves in Oregon<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/guides\/climate-change-housing-impact\/heat-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"exclude\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heat risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Oregon can be intense during heat waves, primarily in the summer and early fall. While Eastern Oregon is generally hotter, they can happen anywhere, so it\u2019s essential to be prepared.
