In just the past five years, wildfires have cost the state more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnr.wa.gov\/publications\/em_leg_dnr_fire_forest_health_2020.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$153 million per year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2022\/12\/04\/many-states-fail-to-adequately-budget-for-wildfire-costs-study-says\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">six times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the cost of 10 years ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fires can happen throughout the state, but they\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mil.wa.gov\/wildfire\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more common<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Eastern Washington and around the Cascades. Fires impact homeowners, too; according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/riskfactor.com\/state\/washington\/53_fsid\/fire\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data from First Street Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 1.6 million properties (52%) are at risk of being affected by a wildfire in the next 30 years.
