Heat waves affected <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/weather\/2024\/09\/01\/summer-record-heat-united-states\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every corner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the country, and July clocked in as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/media\/news\/july-sets-new-temperature-records\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hottest month ever recorded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In fact, from 2023 through 2024, there were 14 consecutive months of record-breaking temperatures. This isn\u2019t a new trend, either: The ten warmest years on record <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/featured-images\/2023-was-warmest-year-modern-temperature-record\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have all occurred<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the last decade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not to say that hot weather isn\u2019t enjoyable. Heat can be a welcomed change from the gloomy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/blog\/coldest-cities-in-the-us\/\" data-wpel-link=\"exclude\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/blog\/rainiest-cities-in-the-us\/\" data-wpel-link=\"exclude\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the winter. But as hot temps become increasingly dangerous, it\u2019s important to be aware of where the heat is most intense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we head into another potentially record-breaking summer, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"exclude\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redfin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has compiled a list of the hottest cities in the U.S. to help. Whether you&#8217;re heat-averse and looking for places to avoid, or a sun-chaser searching for your next home, read on to see which cities top the list \u2013 and how to stay safe in a warming world.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How we measure the hottest cities<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To determine the \u201chottest\u201d cities, <\/span><b>we ranked U.S. cities with populations over 100,000 based on their average summer temperature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This way, we account for cities with hotter summers and cooler winters, rather than favoring tropical places that are warm year-round. We also included each city\u2019s average annual temperature, though it didn\u2019t factor into the rankings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><b>average summer temperature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> combines a city&#8217;s average daily high and low temperatures from June-August. And it\u2019s only getting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/science\/elements\/life-and-death-in-americas-hottest-city\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warmer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 was the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/psr\/yearinreview2024\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hottest year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the city\u2019s history. Phoenix experienced an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/phoenix-summer-heat-cooler-temperatures-6a0093da70f5887336fdf5b2c75c07f9\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unprecedented 113 consecutive days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with temperatures reaching at least 100\u00b0F, shattering the previous record of 76 days set in 1993. This extreme heat stretched into October and produced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/10\/17\/phoenix-shatters-heat-records-fall\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70 days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with temperatures above 110\u00b0F \u2013 more than triple the city\u2019s average of 21 days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new reality is forcing the city to adapt to unbearable summer heat. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sdg.iisd.org\/commentary\/guest-articles\/towards-a-more-resilient-phoenix-how-one-desert-city-is-tackling-extreme-heat-challenges\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent efforts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/globalfutures.asu.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/COPE_Phase2_Report_FINALOct24.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expanding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the use of cool pavement \u2013 a pavement coating that reflects sunlight \u2013 and improving Phoenix&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kjzz.org\/2024-02-07\/content-1870630-phoenix-leaders-approve-14-million-trees-and-shade\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urban Tree and Shade Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Temperatures in Las Vegas are slightly cooler than Phoenix and Yuma, primarily because it\u2019s farther north. However, it has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/08\/11\/upshot\/las-vegas-hot-nights.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">been warming rapidly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially at night. An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.8newsnow.com\/news\/local-news\/a-month-more-100-degree-days-climate-change-will-roast-las-vegas\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">additional month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 100\u00b0F temperatures are anticipated annually by 2050.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Residents experienced this heat first hand in 2024 during a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lasvegassun.com\/news\/2024\/sep\/06\/100-days-of-100-degree-misery-a-summer-of-relentle\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">record-breaking summer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In July, Sin City saw seven straight days with highs above 115\u00b0F and three days topping 118\u00b0F, both records. A temperature of 120\u00b0F was recorded during this heatwave, which broke the all-time record by an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/las-vegas-smashes-all-time-record-high-19560691.php\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">astonishing 3\u00b0F<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The city\u2019s rapid growth has added to the risk.
