Most Americans believe buying a home is a good investment, but a majority also think we\u2019re still in the midst of a crisis, the MacArthur Foundation reported today.<br \/>\nThe group\u2019s annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macfound.org\/press\/press-releases\/prolonged-housing-crisis-diminishes-confidence-american-dream-2015-housing-matters-survey-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">housing survey<\/a> found that 41 percent of Americans think we\u2019re still in crisis mode and 20 percent think the worst is yet to come.<br \/>\nYet more than half\u201456 percent\u2014think buying a home is an excellent long-term investment and one of the best ways to build wealth. That\u2019s up significantly from a year ago and might be a sign of growing confidence in the market as <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/research\/reports\/real-time-housing-market-tracker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">home prices<\/a> continue to climb.<br \/>\nAnd Americans remain steadfastly aspirational. Seventy percent of renters want to own, and millennials in particular consider homeownership a high priority\u201453 percent compared to\u00a043 percent for the total population. The MacArthur poll is the latest in a long line of <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/blog\/2015\/06\/the-week-in-housing-4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">surveys<\/a> that find the housing collapse didn&#8217;t throw cold water on the nation&#8217;s love affair with homeownership.<br \/>\nNot surprisingly, affordability looms large. More than half of Americans have had to sacrifice to to pay their housing bills as rents and and home prices rise faster than <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/blog\/2015\/06\/will-a-burst-of-job-creation-lift-housing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wages<\/a>. But policymakers and the public are ambivalent on what to do about it, said Geoffrey Garin, president of Hart Research, which conducted the poll.<br \/>\n\u201cFrom a public policy perspective, there\u2019s been a lot of conversation about how do you make college more affordable, there\u2019s been a focus on making health care more affordable, but there\u2019s not been a similar conversation about housing,\u201d Garin said. \u201cWhat Americans are telling us through this research is that the absence of the discussion about housing is a substantial lapse.
