As you get the office pool together, there&#8217;s good news today on the <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/mortgage-rate-watch-does-it-matter.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mortgage rate watch<\/a>. The average cost of a 30-year, fixed-rate loan hit its lowest since May, coming in at less than four percent for the fifth week, according to <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.freddiemac.com\/pmms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Freddie Mac<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/30yr-2015Aug271.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-36026 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/30yr-2015Aug271.png\" alt=\"mortgage rates\" width=\"1066\" height=\"604\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/30yr-2015Aug271.png 1066w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/30yr-2015Aug271-300x170.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/30yr-2015Aug271-1024x580.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/30yr-2015Aug271-768x435.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1066px) 100vw, 1066px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nWe all know China&#8217;s financial turmoil has caused the stock market to roller-coaster. Less obvious is what it&#8217;s been doing to mortgage rates, which have been volatile, too.<br \/>\n&#8220;Interest rates also rocked up and down &#8212; although to a lesser extent than equities &#8212; as investors alternated between flights to quality and bargain hunting among beaten-down stocks,&#8221; Freddie Chief Economist Sean Becketti said. Given the craziness, Becketti\u00a0thinks central bankers\u00a0might &#8220;think twice&#8221; before raising interest rates when they meet next month.<br \/>\n<strong>He&#8217;s not alone.<\/strong> Yesterday, Fed VIP William Dudley said a September rate hike looked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2015\/08\/26\/feds-dudley-talks-economy-mum-on-markets-and-policy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;less compelling&#8221;<\/a> than it did a few weeks ago. Dudley, who&#8217;s president of the New York Fed,\u00a0also said his opinion\u00a0might\u00a0change between now and then.<br \/>\nIn fact, we&#8217;ve gotten good economic news in the 24 hours or so since he spoke. Financial markets are showing signs of life and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bea.gov\/newsreleases\/national\/gdp\/gdpnewsrelease.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Commerce Department<\/a>\u00a0said\u00a0the economy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mesirowfinancial.com\/blog\/economics\/2015\/08\/27\/dswonk\/growth-in-2q-revised-much-higher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">grew faster<\/a>\u00a0than we thought in the second quarter. The Fed will raise rates only if the economy is strong enough to handle it.<br \/>\nRemember,\u00a0the Fed doesn\u2019t control your mortgage rate, but its decisions do influence the cost of borrowing. That\u2019s why so many of us are so\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/blog\/2015\/07\/mortgage-rates-hike-or-hype-2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">focused<\/a>\u00a0on what the Fed will do when it meets Sept. 16 and 17. The central bank\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorkfed.org\/markets\/statistics\/dlyrates\/fedrate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">last raised rates<\/a>\u00a0in 2006, when\u00a0the Steelers trounced the Seahawks in Detroit and <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/blog\/about\/press\/releases\/pr-home-buying-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Redfin<\/a> had just opened shop.<br \/>\n<strong>For now, not much has changed for the housing market going into September&#8217;s meeting.<\/strong> The U.S. economy is doing pretty well, <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/home-sales-up-in-july-as-supply-hovers-near-record-lows-2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prices<\/a> are rising, houses are selling, and mortgage rates are as low as they&#8217;ve been in a generation.
