\nUgly numbers.<\/b> As you digest this week\u2019s housing news, here\u2019s a reminder that the market is notoriously difficult to measure. The housing-industrial complex has thousands of rules and there\u2019s vast potential for error. A recent <\/span>study<\/span><\/a> found that sale prices were overstated in 6.25 percent of home transactions. Real Estate Economy Watch has a good <\/span>summary<\/span><\/a>. The study\u2019s authors call out <\/span>Stamp\u2019s Law of Statistics<\/span><\/a>, which says that governments make decisions based on data, but too often forget that that data is collected from the village watchman, \u201cand he says whatever he damn well pleases.\u201d<\/span>
\nIt\u2019s still not over. <\/b>Some housing markets\u00a0still haven’t emerged from the housing collapse. After getting the OK from Congress, Treasury last week rolled out another $2 billion to help homeowners and blighted communities under the <\/span>Hardest Hit<\/span><\/a> program. Neighborhoods in California, Illinois and Ohio are eligible for the <\/span>biggest pots of aid<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>
\n<\/b>The R word.<\/b>\u00a0The energy glut has pushed Alaska, North Dakota, West Virginia and Wyoming into recession<\/a>, Bloomberg reports.
\nA glimmer of good news for Flint.\u00a0<\/b>Clean water remains elusive, but the relocated farmer\u2019s market has brought fresh produce to a lot more people,\u00a0<\/span>Next City<\/a>\u00a0reports.<\/span>
\nEconomic roundup.<\/b>\u00a0Homebuilders were <\/span>down in the dumps<\/span><\/a> this month. On the plus side, researchers from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York noted that house prices are rising but\u00a0<\/span>mortgage debt isn\u2019t<\/span><\/a>.
