As the presidential candidates begin their final sprint toward the finish line, the election 2016 money marathon is just getting started. Collectively, candidates and their allies already have amassed more than <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/pres16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$1.1 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in political donations.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can\u2019t actually buy the White House, or the right to live there. Voters, not rich donors, make the ultimate call, and candidates can\u2019t buy your vote, either. But with a billion dollars they could buy every house in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/5712\/NY\/East-Hampton ?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_content=real_estate&amp;utm_campaign=1002170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">East Hampton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or Vail.<\/span><br \/>\nCampaign fundraising this year is on track to beat the $2.4 billion record set by the last race for 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. By the time ballots were tallied in 2012, politicians and their supporters had spent enough to buy every house in Key West, South Bend, <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/5413\/OH\/Dayton ?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_content=real_estate&amp;utm_campaign=1002170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dayton<\/a> or Dubuque.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt does cost a lot of money to run for office, especially a national office, especially the highest office in the land,\u201d said Sheila Krumholz, executive director of the watchdog\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Responsive Politics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cBut it matters less that it costs millions of dollars and more that it\u2019s coming from a very tiny fraction of Americans.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She\u2019s talking about campaign <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/outsidespending\/summ.php?disp=D&amp;goal_id=megadonors-nav\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">megadonors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who spend giant sums to influence the vote. They\u2019re an outgrowth of a 2010 Supreme Court case, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Citizens_United_v._FEC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Citizens United<\/a>, that lifted limits on political advertising and caused campaign costs to skyrocket. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Upshot<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Candidates and campaigns have to devote enormous resources to raising this kind of money and that\u2019s less time they spend on policies and listening to voters,&#8221; the <a href=\"https:\/\/sunlightfoundation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sunlight Foundation<\/a>&#8216;s Josh Stewart said. &#8220;There are a lot of reasons voters\u00a0should be alert to the amount of money being spent.&#8221;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, after Election Day, megadonors will get invited to the big housewarming party and we won\u2019t. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is the bidding war worth it? Let\u2019s see what the candidates could have bought instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Hillary Clinton<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$256.4 million<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clinton and her supporters have had at least\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/politicalpartytime.org\/calendar\/20160424\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">six fundraisers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just since Sunday so it\u2019s no wonder she\u2019s winning the money race. If she ever gets tired of the limelight, she could retreat to her home in the New York hamlet of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/21975\/NY\/Chappaqua ?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_content=real_estate&amp;utm_campaign=1002170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chappaqua<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. No, like really, seriously retreat &#8212; she could buy every house in the entire community\u00a0for about $187 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"media-48236\" class=\"align-center\">\n<figure style=\"width: 976px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Clinton-Map.jpg\" alt=\"Clinton fundraising\" width=\"976\" height=\"708\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: U.S. Census<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<\/figure>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bernie Sanders<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$182.8 million<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He can\u2019t quite afford Chappaqua and doesn\u2019t have the coin to buy his home city of Burlington, Vermont. \u00a0($1.95 billion). But Sanders has raised enough money to buy a big chunk of the state. He could buy every house in Vermont&#8217;s 20 smallest villages &#8212; all of them, at once. If Sanders\u00a0doesn\u2019t want to spread himself that thin, he can get the picturesque town of <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/10870\/VT\/Manchester-Bennington-County-VT ?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_content=real_estate&amp;utm_campaign=1002170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manchester<\/a> for less than $171 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"media-48237\" class=\"align-center\">\n<figure style=\"width: 749px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Sanders-Map.jpg\" alt=\"Sanders fundraising\" width=\"749\" height=\"727\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: U.S. Census<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donald Trump<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$51.2 million<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forget fundraising. With a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/election-2016\/#656092017eb8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">net worth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of $4.5 billion, Trump is financing his own campaign. No, he can\u2019t take Manhattan ($211.4 billion) or even his birthplace of <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/neighborhood\/43309\/NY\/New-York\/Queens-New-York-NY ?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_content=real_estate&amp;utm_campaign=1002170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Queens<\/a> ($160.3 billion). But check out <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/erincarlyle\/2014\/07\/17\/inside-seven-springs-the-lavish-mansion-where-the-trumps-spent-summers\/#7fb77cc5d670\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seven Springs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the family\u2019s New York retreat, where locals nixed his plans for a golf course. Instead of fighting town hall, Trump could just buy the towns. He could pick up every house in neighboring\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/12517\/NY\/Mount-Kisco ?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_content=real_estate&amp;utm_campaign=1002170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mount Kisco<\/a> ($850 million) and Bedford ($684 million) and still have money left for a few rounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"media-48238\" class=\"align-center\">\n<figure style=\"width: 882px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Trump-Map.jpg\" alt=\"Trump fundraising\" width=\"882\" height=\"720\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: U.S. Census<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<\/figure>\n<h3>Ted Cruz<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raised: $141.9 million<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The senator goes home to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/8903\/TX\/Houston ?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_content=real_estate&amp;utm_campaign=1002170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Houston<\/a> ($75.2 billion) where he has a luxury condo, but his campaign war chest pales in comparison to those of his rivals. Still, it\u2019s enough to buy every house in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/9767\/TX\/Kaufman\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaufman, Texas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Dallas suburb with more than 2,600 homes. If he wants to spread out, Texas has plenty room. There are more than 1,400 Lone Star towns well within his price range. He can\u2019t buy his entire community ($2.13 billion). He can\u2019t afford the governor\u2019s retreat in the neighborhood of <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/1663\/OH\/Bexley ?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_content=real_estate&amp;utm_campaign=1002170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bexley<\/a> ($1.1 billion). And he can\u2019t even buy all the houses in rural\u00a0McKee\u2019s Rocks, Pennsylvania\u00a0($49 million), his birthplace.
