People pay to live near culture, creativity, jobs and the chance to collaborate with a variety of talented individuals. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what happens when a city\u2019s not ready to absorb all this popularity? Often, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/homebuyers-are-bucking-the-urban-revival-as-burbs-beckon.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">longer commute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redfin\u00a0looked at the twelve most and least expensive metros where we\u00a0collect housing data. How do their commutes times stand up to the national average of 25.7 minutes? While strong transit systems are important for a city in a number of ways, they\u2019re not necessarily faster than driving: plenty of people in major metropolises have hour-plus commutes, even if they live blocks from a train station.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When comparing commute times with city prices, what we found was that if you live in an expensive city, not only are you paying more for your house or apartment, you\u2019re also spending more time getting to and from work. Many San Franciscans get an arduous commute to go with their modest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/CA\/Millbrae\/619-Santa-Florita-Ave-94030\/home\/1924833\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$1 million house<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while Buffalonians buying a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/NY\/Buffalo\/31-Pawnee-Pkwy-14210\/home\/92539973\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$110,000 house<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> get a breezy drive time.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a certain point, San Franciscans will get fed up and start moving somewhere else. In fact, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2016\/05\/02\/survey-says-34-percent-of-bay-area-residents-are-ready-to-leave.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/blog\/2015\/05\/the-digital-diaspora.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">already<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/the-second-silicon-valleys.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">happening<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Last year, Redfin real estate agent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/real-estate-agents\/warren-teller?%20utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_content=real_estate&amp;utm_campaign=1002170\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warren Teller<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helped a couple from San Francisco buy a $710,000 five-bedroom home in Richmond, Virginia, after they figured out that one of them could telecommute for\u00a0a job in San Francisco.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Richmond, the master bedroom in their new home was larger than their entire San Francisco apartment and their mortgage payment was less than their rent. <\/span><br \/>\n<script src=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/javascripts\/api\/viz_v1.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<div class=\"tableauPlaceholder\" style=\"width: 654px; height: 695px;\"><noscript><a href='https:&#47;&#47;redfindevelop.wpengine.com&#47;blog&#47;2016&#47;05&#47;expensive-cities-have-longer-commutes-data-shows.html'><img alt=' ' src='https:&#47;&#47;public.tableau.com&#47;static&#47;images&#47;Ex&#47;ExpensiveCitiesalsohaveLongerCommutes&#47;SalePricevsCommute&#47;1_rss.png' style='border: none' \/><\/a><\/noscript><object class=\"tableauViz\" style=\"display: none;\" width=\"654\" height=\"695\"><param name=\"host_url\" value=\"https%3A%2F%2Fpublic.tableau.com%2F\" \/><param name=\"site_root\" value=\"\" \/><param name=\"name\" value=\"ExpensiveCitiesalsohaveLongerCommutes\/SalePricevsCommute\" \/><param name=\"tabs\" value=\"yes\" \/><param name=\"toolbar\" value=\"yes\" \/><param name=\"static_image\" value=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/static\/images\/Ex\/ExpensiveCitiesalsohaveLongerCommutes\/SalePricevsCommute\/1.png\" \/><param name=\"animate_transition\" value=\"yes\" \/><param name=\"display_static_image\" value=\"yes\" \/><param name=\"display_spinner\" value=\"yes\" \/><param name=\"display_overlay\" value=\"yes\" \/><param name=\"display_count\" value=\"yes\" \/><param name=\"showTabs\" value=\"y\" \/><\/object><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s not just San Francisco. Communities with lower costs of living and shorter commutes are drawing workers from nearby larger cities as remote work becomes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/hhes\/commuting\/files\/2012\/Home-based%20Workers%20in%20the%20United%20States%20Infographic.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more routine.<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redfin real estate agent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/real-estate-agents\/kent-selders?%20utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_content=real_estate&amp;utm_campaign=1002170\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kent Selders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Grand Rapids is seeing more clients moving from Chicago to Grand Rapids, where the median home price is only $153,000. \u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n\u201cThey\u2019re not moving because of a job, they\u2019re moving with the prospect of better opportunities and a higher standard of living,\u201d Selders said. \u201cMany of my relocating clients have employment that is not geographically bound. They can work anywhere they have high-speed internet.\u201d<br \/>\nThe median home price in Chicago is more than\u00a0$75,000 higher\u00a0than in Grand Rapids and the commute is eight minutes longer each way.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many mid-sized cities, there aren\u2019t enough homes to keep up. For example, for the first time in years, this spring the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/why-cant-i-find-a-house-to-buy-in-omaha.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midwest is experiencing housing shortages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and rising prices. Demand may continue to be steep in many mid-size cities across the country if current trends continue.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Methodology<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average national commute time is based on the Census Bureau\u2019s ACS 2014 five-year survey.
