As prices jumped, sales reversed course, falling nearly 5.3 percent from a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The supply of homes for sale tumbled 12.3 percent compared to a year earlier, the eighth-straight drop and the biggest decrease in more than two years. Fewer sellers put their houses on the market, pushing new listings down more than 18 percent from the same time last year.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"align-center\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"media-48864\" class=\"align-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/chic-prices.png\" alt=\"Chicago home prices\" \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supply grew particularly tight in <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/neighborhood\/29965\/IL\/Chicago\/Montclare-Chicago-IL?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_content=real_estate&amp;utm_campaign=1002170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montclare<\/a>, where inventory was down more than 56 percent compared to a year ago. The inventory of houses for sale also shrunk dramatically in Tri-Taylor, down 48 percent, and <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/neighborhood\/158742\/IL\/Chicago\/Washington-Park-Chicago-IL?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_content=real_estate&amp;utm_campaign=1002170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Park<\/a>, down nearly 38 percent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve been kicking off consultations with new homebuyers by explaining that supply is tight, which means the most desirable homes sell within days in a bidding war more often than not,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/blog?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_content=real_estate&amp;utm_campaign=1002170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redfin <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agent Lamar Austin said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor competition-averse clients, I highlight homes that have been on the market for at least 30 to 60 days. These tend to be the ones that other buyers have passed on because don\u2019t have the clearest listing photos or modern finishes,\u201d Austin said. \u201cMost new homeowners would rather spend some money upgrading a home to make it their own than feel like they overpaid in a bidding war.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"media-48865\" class=\"align-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/chicago-sales.png\" alt=\"chicago home sales\" \/><\/figure>\n<h3>Hot Neighborhoods<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/neighborhood\/35021\/IL\/Chicago\/Ukrainian-Village\/filter\/include=forsale?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_content=real_estate&amp;utm_campaign=1002170\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ukrainian Village<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this year\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/blog\/2016\/01\/redfin-predicts-the-hottest-neighborhoods-of-2016.html?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_content=real_estate&amp;utm_campaign=1002170\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hottest neighborhood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was the most expensive in the city, with a typical home selling for $577,450.
