Conservatives like the country. Liberals want ethnically diverse neighborhoods. Conservatives want neighbors who share the same religious faith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Political cliches, perhaps, but <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.people-press.org\/2014\/06\/12\/political-polarization-in-the-american-public\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has shown these stereotypes are grounded in truth. Studies show an America divided by not just politics, income and race, but place, too. Cleveland and Philadelphia, where Republicans and Democrats will gather this week and next to rally around their presidential candidates, are no exception.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The political battlegrounds of Ohio and Pennsylvania have an evenly divided electorate, meaning national candidates have to campaign with a fury to secure even a razor-thin lead.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that doesn\u2019t mean Republicans and Democrats in those states are throwing block parties together. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Congress mired in partisan gridlock and the presidential campaign too close to call, Americans are squaring off, too, neighborhood by neighborhood. To illustrate, <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/blog?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_content=real_estate&amp;utm_campaign=1002170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Redfin<\/a> partnered with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.claritycampaigns.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clarity Campaign Labs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to take snapshots of political affiliation and homeownership in greater Cleveland and Philadelphia. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The picture is clear &#8212; we don\u2019t live together.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Blue downtowns, red suburbs<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Republican convention is being held in downtown <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/4145\/OH\/Cleveland?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_content=real_estate&amp;utm_campaign=1002170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cleveland<\/a>, which is deeply blue with Democratic voters. Using data from Clarity, a Democratic analytics firm that scores ZIP codes according to the political leanings of their electorates, it\u2019s easy to see the region getting redder with conservative voters the farther one gets from the city. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"Container\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%; position: relative; display: block; width: 100%;\"><iframe id=\"ViostreamIframe\" style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/shared\/T37G8WKZW?:showVizHome=no:embed=true\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Philadelphia, where Democrats will gather for their convention next week, the pattern is the same. Clarity data shows a bluer downtown and redder towns and suburbs.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"Container\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%; position: relative; display: block; width: 100%;\"><iframe id=\"ViostreamIframe\" style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/views\/Philly2\/Sheet2?:showVizHome=no:embed=true\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Republicans own, Democrats rent<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most neighborhoods in and around Cleveland and Philadelphia have a homeownership rate above the national average of 63.5 percent, according to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/housing\/hvs\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Census Bureau<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> data. But the odds of owning a home in both metros break down along ideological lines. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Cleveland&#8217;s Republican-leaning ZIP codes, the rate of homeownership is an impressive 83 percent. In Democratic communities, it\u2019s only 59 percent, well below the national average.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"Container\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%; position: relative; display: block; width: 100%;\"><iframe id=\"ViostreamIframe\" style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/views\/Cleveland2\/Sheet6?:showVizHome=no:embed=true\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same holds true in greater Philadelphia, where the homeownership rate is 79.5 percent in conservative\u00a0communities and less than 62 percent in liberal ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"Container\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%; position: relative; display: block; width: 100%;\"><iframe id=\"ViostreamIframe\" style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/views\/Philly1\/Sheet1?:showVizHome=no:embed=true\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Big houses, little houses<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Republican-leaning ZIPs in both metros also tend have more expensive houses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homes in Cleveland\u2019s Republican neighborhoods sold for an average $301,700. In Democratic areas, the average sale price was $228,000, Redfin data shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Philadelphia&#8217;s red neighborhoods, the average home sold for nearly $197,500, Redfin data showed. Houses in blue communities went for about half that, just above $99,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To see the price divide up close, look at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/zipcode\/44233?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_content=real_estate&amp;utm_campaign=1002170\">Hinckley Township<\/a>, about a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0half-hour drive from downtown Cleveland. The leafy community has golf courses, horse stables, votes Republican and has the area&#8217;s highest rate of homeownership, at 96 percent.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among Democratic-leaning neighborhoods, the city of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/zipcode\/44001?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_content=real_estate&amp;utm_campaign=1002170\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amherst<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ranks highest, with a homeownership rate of 88 percent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Hinckley, a house typically sells for $318,000, more than twice what a house costs in Amherst.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What&#8217;s going on?<\/h3>\n<p>The housing gerrymander is a component of what the non-partisan\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pew Research Center<\/a> called the \u201cideological silos\u201d that have sprung up in America over the past two decades.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, Pew asked people what they would look for in a community if they were planning to move.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three-quarters of conservatives wanted a neighborhood where<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cthe houses are larger and farther apart, but schools, stores and restaurants are several miles away.\u201d Liberals in similar numbers preferred smaller living spaces within walking distance of schools and shops, Pew <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the same<a href=\"http:\/\/www.people-press.org\/2014\/06\/12\/section-3-political-polarization-and-personal-life\/\"> survey<\/a>, most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liberals &#8212; 56 percent &#8212; said they\u2019d seek out racially and ethnically diverse communities. Among Republicans, a plurality &#8212; 43 percent &#8212; wanted neighbors with similar religious beliefs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Age, income and race factor into housing preferences, of course, as much as they play into political leanings. Liberals are more likely than conservatives to be young, less white and lower income, for example. For those reasons and others, homeownership is concentrated among conservative-leaning Americans, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centerforpolitics.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Virginia Center for Politics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt isn\u2019t necessarily that homeownership is directly connected to partisanship, but all the demographics around being likely Democrat &#8212; being younger, less white, slightly lower income &#8212; tend to correlate with slightly lower homeownership,\u201d Clarity co-owner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.claritycampaigns.com\/team\/#our-team\">David Radloff<\/a> said. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>So what?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Americans have long clustered themselves by incomes, race, education either by choice or circumstance. But rising ideological uniformity is a newer phenomenon that&#8217;s contributing to America&#8217;s growing political polarization.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/2016\/07\/16\/want-to-understand-voter-anger-in-2016-don-t-overlook-housing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">homeownership divide<\/a> is making things worse by feeding the nation&#8217;s wealth gap,\u00a0which increasingly is breaking down by race. Whites on average have twice the income of blacks and Hispanics but six times the wealth, according to Urban Institute, a liberal-leaning think tank. Uneven access to homeownership is one reason, and it&#8217;s a contributor to voter anger and frustration.<\/li>\n<li>Republicans are the biggest beneficiaries of U.S. housing policy. High rates of homeownership and bigger houses allow them to reap the biggest benefits from mortgage-interest tax deductions and government-supported home loan progams.\u00a0It\u2019s surprising, then, that Republicans are leading the charge to scale back that support and do away with consumer protections established after the 2008 housing collapse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Methodology<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data on political affiliation courtesy of Clarity Campaign Labs.
