Their top destination? <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/1826\/MA\/Boston\">Boston<\/a>. Just under 15 percent of those looking to leave New York were searching in the Boston area. Rounding out the top five were <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/30756\/GA\/Atlanta\">Atlanta<\/a> (10%), <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/15502\/PA\/Philadelphia\">Philadelphia<\/a> (9%), <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/12839\/DC\/Washington-DC\">Washington, DC<\/a> (7%) and <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/11203\/CA\/Los-Angeles\">Los Angeles<\/a> (6%).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"media-65085\" class=\"align-none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/profile\/redfin#!\/vizhome\/MigrationAnalysisbyRedfinQ4-2018\/MigrationMap\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"New York Migration: 2018 Q4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/New-York-Migration_2018-Q4.jpg\" alt=\"New York Migration: 2018 Q4\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>One in five New Yorkers looking for homes outside the metro area are potential snowbirds (up slightly from 19 percent a year earlier), looking for homes in warmer southern locales in Florida, Arizona, and Southern California such as <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/11458\/FL\/Miami\">Miami<\/a> (6%), <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/14240\/AZ\/Phoenix\">Phoenix<\/a> (2%) and <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/16904\/CA\/San-Diego\">San Diego<\/a> (1%). Cities in Florida alone make up 10 percent of the locations where departing New Yorkers are searching (unchanged from a year earlier).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of retirees leave New York because the cost of living is so much lower in other places,\u201d said New York Redfin listing agent <a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/real-estate-agents\/martin-freiman\">Martin Freiman<\/a>. \u201cMany of them are also looking for more land or a warmer climate, so they end up in places like Florida and Arizona.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The West Coast barely registers in the minds of New Yorkers, with destinations in California, Oregon and Washington adding up to less than the share of New Yorkers looking in Boston alone.
