But inland, where homes and costs of living are more affordable, millennials are able to lay down roots, start businesses, and as a result they are transforming places like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/14237\/OK\/Oklahoma-City\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oklahoma City<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/17150\/UT\/Salt-Lake-City\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salt Lake City<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/5665\/MI\/Detroit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detroit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into hip havens for their generation. Across the 50 largest U.S. metros, 31.9 percent of millennials (those age 18 to 34) own homes and 5.9 percent of businesses are owned by millennials. It\u2019s called the \u2018Silicon Slopes.\u2019\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI recently helped homebuyer move to Salt Lake City from the Palo Alto area, where he had been renting a two-bedroom, one-bath condo. Here, he bought a $650,000 house where he could work remotely, still on his Palo Alto salary. He was astonished that his Salt Lake City mortgage would cost him less per month than his California rent,\u201d continued Aycock, \u201cI\u2019ve found that affordability is the number one concern for millennials.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Oklahoma City, Oklahoma<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOklahoma remains a strong choice for affordable housing and is a great place for small businesses to grow,\u201d said local <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/real-estate-agents\/michelle-leader\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redfin agent Michelle Leader<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWe have a beautiful downtown that offers unique food options, dog parks, entertainment, and a waterpark. \u00a0This coupled with our new public trolley system attracts people seeking an urban lifestyle without breaking the bank to get it.\u201d <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe tend to see people wanting to make investments in the downtown area as it is growing,\u201d continued Leader. \u201cWe also see a high demand for art district homes like the Plaza or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/neighborhood\/154124\/OK\/Oklahoma-City\/Paseo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paseo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the desired area due to the availability of artistic shops, dining, and entertainment.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Detroit, Michigan<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of millennials are coming back home after attending university or living in other larger metros, particularly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/29470\/IL\/Chicago\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chicago<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, given its close proximity across the lake,\u201d said local <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/real-estate-agents\/adam-rasor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redfin agent Adam Rasor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cJob opportunities are abundant in the Detroit region, with surrounding suburbs like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/782\/MI\/Ann-Arbor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ann Arbor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/20232\/MI\/Troy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Troy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fostering a lot of tech companies.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is a big push in new construction right now to cater to the tastes of millennial homebuyers. Not a lot of millennials are looking to take on renovation projects,\u201d continued Rasor. \u201c Communities like Royal Oak are experiencing an influx of younger homeowners and the downtown areas are growing with more attractions and nightlife as a result. Communities like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/7122\/MI\/Ferndale\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ferndale<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> foster an inclusive LGBTQ atmosphere.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Raleigh, North Carolina<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millennials are moving from the Northeast, D.C. and California to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/35711\/NC\/Raleigh\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raleigh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the affordable housing and high-tech job opportunities, and they are bringing their parents with them, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/35711\/NC\/Raleigh\/real-estate\/agents\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local Redfin agents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Millennials with new or growing families are drawn to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/neighborhood\/53465\/NC\/Durham\/Research-Triangle-Park\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research Triangle Park<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and companies like Sysco, Citrix and Epic Games. The relatively warm climate and affordable housing is attractive to their Baby Boomer parents, who follow to be close to their children and grandchildren. Raleigh, the state capital, is often compared to Charlotte. But while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/3105\/NC\/Charlotte\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charlotte<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a banking-centric city in terms of job opportunities, Raleigh has more of a startup culture. Raleigh boasts flex workspaces and a start-up culture, which is unique for the South-Atlantic area. <\/span><br \/>\n<b>Hartford, Connecticut<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millennials on the East Coast are moving to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/city\/9406\/CT\/Hartford\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hartford<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in search of affordable housing with urban amenities. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOver the past decade, we have seen a revitalization of downtown Hartford, very much catering \u00a0to millennials,\u201d said local <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/real-estate-agents\/richard-thomas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redfin agent Richard Thomas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cTransit has improved, with the latest addition of the Hartford train line that connects Connecticut to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redfin.com\/state\/Massachusetts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Massachusetts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and onward to New York City. We have also seen redevelopment of factories into housing.
