In expensive metros like <\/span>New York<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>San Francisco<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Los Angeles<\/span><\/a>, home prices have risen so much in the last decade that many local residents can no longer afford the cost of housing where they live. 2020 Presidential candidates like Kamala Harris and Cory Booker want to help this situation by providing <\/span>rent relief<\/span><\/a> (a refundable tax credit) to renters spending more than 30 percent of their income on rent and utilities. But such a policy would encourage renters to stay where they are and continue on as renters without a way to gain wealth through home equity as homeowners. Their opponent Andrew Yang has a different idea; he wants to make it easier for Americans to move to places with better economic opportunity and affordability. <\/span>
\nTo do so, Yang proposes giving a <\/span>$1,000 tax refund<\/span><\/a> to any American relocating for work, in addition to a $1,000 per month <\/span>universal basic income<\/span><\/a>. He also wants to reevaluate professional licensing requirements that make it difficult to move across state lines. A nail technician in California, for example, couldn\u2019t immediately open a business in Texas before gaining a Texas license.<\/span><\/p>\n
