That\u2019s roughly the same share as in November 2019, when 39% of respondents said the same thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More people oppose low-income housing\u2014which the survey question defines as \u201caffordable housing in the form of mid-grade townhomes, apartments or similar\u201d\u2014in their neighborhood than any other type of building. Shopping centers, which 34% of all respondents oppose, and office buildings (32%) come next.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/07\/29\/trump-housing-policy-low-income-suburbs-386414\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Trump suggested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that people who live in the suburbs are opposed to low-income housing when his administration rescinded a 2015 federal rule called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlp.org\/initiatives\/fair-housing-housing-for-people-with-disabilities\/affirmatively-furthering-fair-housing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meant to combat discrimination by requiring local governments to proactively ensure fair housing to receive federal housing funding. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90550658\/housing-is-still-wildly-discriminatory-joe-biden-has-a-plan-to-change-that\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe Biden has pledged to reinstate <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the rule if he is elected. The Washington Post <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2020\/07\/19\/trailer-can-trump-sell-fear-suburbs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that in a town hall meeting aimed at Wisconsin voters, President Trump said Democrats would \u201celiminate single-family zoning, bringing who knows into your suburbs, so your communities will be unsafe and your housing values will go down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to reinstating the rule discussed above, Biden\u2019s $640 billion <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/joebiden.com\/housing\/#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">housing plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would combat discriminatory housing practices and support building more low-income housing and single-family homes in urban, suburban and rural areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We broke out the survey results by respondents\u2019 neighborhood type to see if rural and suburban dwellers are more likely than city residents to oppose low-income housing in their neighborhoods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While people who live in rural and suburban areas are more likely to oppose low-income housing in their neighborhood than city dwellers, less than half of people from each neighborhood type are opposed: Forty-five percent of rural residents and 44% of suburban residents oppose low-income housing, versus 31% of people who live in the city. Rural and suburban residents are also more likely than city residents to oppose nearly every other building type in their neighborhood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-71562 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image_720-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"572\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image_720-1.png 572w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/image_720-1-238x300.png 238w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 572px) 100vw, 572px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlthough research indicates that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2016\/5\/2\/11568262\/low-income-housing-impact\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low-income housing doesn\u2019t increase crime<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or substantially <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ced.sog.unc.edu\/does-affordable-housing-negatively-impact-nearby-property-values\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce nearby property values<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there\u2019s still a misconception that housing for low-income people degrades a neighborhood,\u201d said Redfin chief economist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/author\/darylfairweather\/\">Daryl Fairweather<\/a>. \u201cPeople who live in urban areas are less likely to harbor the misconception, likely because they already live among a more economically diverse population.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBuilding different types of housing in suburban, urban and rural neighborhoods alike helps to desegregate communities, which is one of the first steps in combating systemic racism and other inequalities,\u201d Fairweather continued. \u201cPassing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5889680\/america-segregated-neighborhoods-equality\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">national zoning reform<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and requiring all neighborhood types to allow affordable housing could help close the gaps in education, homeownership and wealth.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Residents of all three neighborhood types are more likely to oppose low-income housing than any other building type. But for rural residents specifically, nearly as many are opposed to shopping centers (43%) and office buildings (42%) as low-income housing. Rural residents were also most likely to say they wouldn\u2019t mind any of the building types listed in their neighborhood, with 24% selecting that option.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>People who live in swing states are most likely to oppose low-income housing in their neighborhood<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forty-three percent of swing-state residents don\u2019t want to see low-income housing in their neighborhood, versus 41% of people in red states and 33% of people in blue states.*\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBiden has focused his housing policies on supporting low-income Americans who have been excluded from certain neighborhoods because they can\u2019t afford housing,\u201d Fairweather said. \u201cIn contrast, President Trump is responding to the anxiety some people feel about low-income housing entering their neighborhoods, which may be a bigger issue in red states and the collection of swing states that matter most in this year\u2019s election, according to the survey results.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>White people are most likely to oppose low-income housing in their neighborhood<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When broken down by race, white respondents are most likely to oppose low-income housing in their neighborhood and Black respondents are least likely.
