{"id":71569,"date":"2020-10-28T04:41:40","date_gmt":"2020-10-28T11:41:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/?p=71569"},"modified":"2020-10-28T04:41:40","modified_gmt":"2020-10-28T11:41:40","slug":"migration-trends-pandemic-new-york-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/migration-trends-pandemic-new-york-california\/","title":{"rendered":"New York\u2019s Loss is Florida\u2019s Gain: Redfin.Com Users Leaving Expensive States Picks Up With Pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly 53,000 more Redfin.com users looked to move out of California than into it in the third quarter, a 62% increase since the third quarter of 2019 and the highest rate since Redfin started tracking migration in the beginning of 2017.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The story is similar in New York, where almost 47,000 more Redfin.com users looked to leave the state than move in during the third quarter, roughly 35% more than the 35,000 home searchers looking to leave during the same time period last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California and New York had the biggest upticks in people looking to move out of state\u2014minus people looking to move in\u2014since last year, followed by Massachusetts, Washington, D.C., and Illinois.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNew York\u2019s loss is Florida\u2019s gain,\u201d said Redfin economist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/author\/taylormarr\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taylor Marr<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWhen the pandemic hit the U.S. in March, remote workers started leaving New York City and its ultra-expensive housing in search of wide-open spaces, sunshine and affordable homes\u2014all of which you can find in Florida, with the bonus of no state income tax. The trend has only intensified as the pandemic continues and people feel more certain of their remote work and school plans.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly 22,000 more Redfin.com users looked to move <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">into<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Florida than out in the third quarter, almost twice as many entrants as the third quarter of 2019 and the highest net inflow for the state since we started tracking migration. Movement into Florida has accelerated since the beginning of the year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florida, Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina and Nevada saw the biggest increases in people looking to move in\u2014minus people looking to move away\u2014since last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-71585 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/moving-out-of-ny-and-ca.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/moving-out-of-ny-and-ca.png 625w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/moving-out-of-ny-and-ca-300x223.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The uptick in people leaving California and New York could impact the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/migration-politics-election-2020\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">political makeup of their destination states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For instance, wealthy retirees moving from New York to Florida may be contributing to an increase in registered Republicans in the Sunshine State, and remote workers leaving California could be a factor in the uptick in registered Democrats in Arizona.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Methodology<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This analysis is based on a sample of more than 2 million Redfin.com users who searched for homes across 87 metro areas that make up roughly 80% of the U.S. population, excluding searches unlikely to precede an actual relocation or home purchase. To be included in this dataset, a Redfin.com user must have viewed at least 10 homes in a particular metro area, and homes in that area must make up at least 80% of the user\u2019s
