That\u2019s up from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/presidential-candidates-and-housing-weighs-on-homebuyers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">9% of respondents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> when we asked the same question in 2016.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 16% total is broken into three categories: Those who would absolutely leave the country, those who would seriously consider it and those who would consider it. Three percent of respondents would absolutely leave the country if their candidate loses, versus zero in 2016.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-71574 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/voters-more-likely-to-consider-leaving.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"634\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/voters-more-likely-to-consider-leaving.png 634w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/voters-more-likely-to-consider-leaving-300x222.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Broken down by who they plan to vote for, 20% of people who plan to vote for Joe Biden would consider leaving the country if he loses, while 15% of President Trump\u2019s supporters said the same thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">President Trump himself has said he would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2020\/10\/16\/trump-jokes-he-might-leave-country-if-he-loses-joe-biden\/3688173001\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">consider leaving the country<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> if Joe Biden wins the election, though his comment seems to fall into the category of \u201cI might joke about it, but I won\u2019t actually do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-71575 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/biden-voters-more-likely-to-leave.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"631\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/biden-voters-more-likely-to-leave.png 631w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/biden-voters-more-likely-to-leave-300x222.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 631px) 100vw, 631px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe desire to leave the country due to political dissatisfaction is relatable for people on both sides of the aisle, but most people who say they would consider it likely won\u2019t follow through given the financial and legal barriers,\u201d said Redfin chief economist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/author\/darylfairweather\/\">Daryl Fairweather<\/a>. \u201cStill, the uptick in the share of people who say they would consider leaving the country since the 2016 election is one sign that the nation has become more politically divided.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Forty-two percent of U.S. residents\u00a0 said they would be hesitant to move to an area where most residents have political views that differ from their own, according to another question from the same Redfin survey fielded in October. That\u2019s up from 38% in June 2019 and 32% in June 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>One-quarter of respondents would want to move if states had more control over their own laws<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Twenty-four percent of respondents said they would want to move to a different state if the Supreme Court increases states\u2019 rights with respect to health care, reproductive laws, gun laws, etc. Twenty-one percent said it would make them like their current state more, while 55% said an increase in states\u2019 rights wouldn\u2019t impact how they feel about where they live.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An increase in states\u2019 rights could make choosing which state to live in more significant because the laws from state to state would differ more than they do now. For instance, if the Supreme Court were to overturn Roe v. Wade, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/10\/15\/upshot\/what-happens-if-roe-is-overturned.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">state rather than federal law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> would determine the legality of abortion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHomebuyers could \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Foot_voting\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">vote with their feet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019 and relocate out of a state if their laws change in a way that is misaligned with their values,\u201d Fairweather said. \u201cBusinesses may also move for the same reason, or to follow the talent, which would impact local economies. When Georgia passed a highly restrictive abortion bill in 2019, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/companies-threatening-to-leave-georgia-abortion-law_n_5cf044e5e4b0e346ce7b4724\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">many companies threatened to relocate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Although a\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5866714\/georgia-heartbeat-abortion-law-ban\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">federal judge blocked that bill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a more conservative judiciary may have allowed it to become law, which likely would have caused some residents to leave while attracting others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nearly 29% of Redfin.com users <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/july-august-2020-housing-migration-trends\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">looked to move to another metro area<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in July and August 2020, the highest share since Redfin started tracking migration. That record-high share is partly due to the uptick in remote work stemming from the coronavirus pandemic and it\u2019s an indication that people are more open to making long-distance moves than ever before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Broken down by who they plan to vote for, 30% of respondents who plan to vote for President Trump would want to move to a different state if the Supreme Court were to increase states\u2019 rights, versus 21% of Biden voters. Twenty-three percent of Trump voters and 20% of Biden voters said an increase in states\u2019 rights would make them like their current state more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The fact that Trump voters are more likely to want to move based on a potential increase in states\u2019 rights is driven by those who currently live in blue states. Trump voters who live in blue states are much more likely to want to move if the Supreme Court were to increase states\u2019 rights (38%) than Trump voters who live in red states (24%). Biden voters who live in red states are slightly more likely to want to move than those who live in blue states (24% versus 19%). Trump and Biden voters who live in red states are equally likely to want to move based on a potential increase in states\u2019 rights. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-71576 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/trump-voters-supreme-court.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"651\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/trump-voters-supreme-court.png 651w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/trump-voters-supreme-court-300x216.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 651px) 100vw, 651px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Methodology<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Redfin surveyed over 3,000 U.S. residents aged 18 and up between October 7 and October 15, 2020.
