More than a quarter (27%) of Americans\u00a0 said that recent natural disasters such as fires, floods and storms have made them want to move away from where they currently live, or have changed <\/span>where<\/span><\/i> they want to move to, according to an October Redfin survey of more than 3,000 U.S. residents.\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, half of Americans said that recent natural disasters have had no impact on their feelings about where they live, and almost a quarter (23%) said that such events have made them like where they live more.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wildfires have ravaged the U.S. this year, burning millions of acres across <\/span>California<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Oregon<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Washington<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Colorado<\/span><\/a>. Six of the 20 <\/span>largest<\/span><\/a> wildfires in California history have taken place in 2020 alone, and two of the state\u2019s ongoing blazes\u2014the Silverado Fire and the Blue Ridge Fire\u2014put nearly 100,000 Southern California residents under emergency <\/span>evacuation<\/span><\/a> orders. The U.S. has also experienced 27 <\/span>named storms<\/span><\/a> this year, just one away from the annual record set in 2005. The latest to hit was Hurricane Zeta, which made landfall in <\/span>Louisiana<\/span><\/a> on Wednesday, <\/span>leaving<\/span><\/a> at least five people dead and more than 2.1 million without power.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cClimate change still doesn\u2019t feel like an immediate threat to a lot of people, but as more folks come face to face with wildfires, hurricanes and floods, we\u2019ll see an increase in the number of Americans who consider moving due to natural disasters,\u201d said Redfin chief economist <\/span>Daryl Fairweather<\/span><\/a>. \u201cClimate change could also become a bigger factor in the homebuying process if insurance companies stop offering coverage in catastrophe-prone areas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

H<\/span>omes in high-wildfire-risk<\/a> zip codes sold for an average of 3.9% less than those in low-risk zip codes in 2020, compared with a 2.5% premium in 2012, <\/span>according to an October Redfin <\/span>analysis<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Northeast has the largest share of people who say natural disasters have changed where they want to live.<\/span><\/h3>\n

A third of survey participants in the Northeast said that recent natural disasters have made them want to move away from where they currently live, or have changed where they want to move to. That compares with 28% of respondents in the South, 27% in the West and 23% in the Midwest.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone here is in shock. You always hear about people evacuating because of the wildfires in California, but you never think it will actually happen to you,\u201d Amiri said by phone Tuesday. \u201cThe attitude right now is that everything will be fine and go back to normal in a few days. I called every single one of my clients who is close to closing a deal on a home, and all of them said they\u2019re comfortable with moving forward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Methodology<\/span><\/h2>\n

Redfin surveyed more than 3,000 U.S. residents aged 18 and up between October 7, 2020 and October 15, 2020. The demographics of the survey sample were on par with U.S. Census breakdowns for age, gender, race, and geography in order to match the makeup of the general population as closely as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n

For this report, we focused on responses to the question \u201cHave recent natural disasters (e.g. fires<\/a>, floods<\/a>, storms<\/a>) changed your opinion of where you want to live?\u201d The answer choices were \u201cNo, it has had no impact on my feelings about where I want to live\u201d; \u201cNo, it has made me like where I live more\u201d; \u201cYes, it has made me change my plans of where I want to move to\u201d; and \u201cYes, it has made me want to move away from where I live.\u201d To simplify the findings, we combined the results of the final two questions.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
