That\u2019s slightly higher than the share of respondents (12%) who said they would <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> live in a place where abortion is fully legal. Other respondents felt less strongly: 17% said they \u201cprefer not to\u201d live somewhere abortion is fully legal and 28% said they \u201cprefer to\u201d live in such a place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combined, 40% of respondents had a positive view on living in a place where abortion is fully legal, while 32% had a negative view.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-73290\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/abortion-chart-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1327\" height=\"870\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/abortion-chart-1.png 1327w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/abortion-chart-1-300x197.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/abortion-chart-1-1024x671.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/abortion-chart-1-768x504.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1327px) 100vw, 1327px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is according to an August 2021 Redfin survey of 1,023 U.S. residents who moved to a new home during the 18 months prior to the survey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interest in relocating has soared during the pandemic as remote work has allowed many Americans to prioritize affordability and living near family over proximity to the office. In July and August, 30.1% of Redfin.com users <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/july-august-2021-housing-migration-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">looking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to move to a different metro area. That\u2019s down slightly from a peak of 31.5% at the start of the 2021, but still up from roughly 26% before the coronavirus pandemic. Texas, where most abortions were recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/10\/08\/us\/texas-abortion-ban.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">banned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has been a popular landing spot\u2014especially for people coming from California. Austin, San Antonio and Dallas have all ranked among the top 10 migration destinations in recent months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople take the politics of a place into consideration when deciding where to move, but the truth of the matter is that other factors including housing affordability and access to jobs and schools take priority,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said Redfin Deputy Chief Economist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/author\/taylormarr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taylor Marr<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cOftentimes this means someone will move from a blue state to a red state (or vice versa), but choose a home in a neighborhood where most people hold the same political views as they do. Austin\u2014a liberal Texas enclave that\u2019s attracting scores of left-leaning folks from pricier coastal cities\u2014is just one example.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost Half of Respondents Favor Living in a Place Where It\u2019s Illegal to Discriminate Based on Sexual Orientation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly half (49%) of respondents had a positive view on living somewhere with broad anti-discrimination laws related to gender\/sexual orientation. By comparison, 23% had a negative view.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-73291\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/anti-discrim-chart.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1327\" height=\"870\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/anti-discrim-chart.png 1327w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/anti-discrim-chart-300x197.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/anti-discrim-chart-1024x671.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/anti-discrim-chart-768x504.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1327px) 100vw, 1327px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the first quarter of 2021, leaders in at least 25 states <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/coming-out-day-biden-lgbtq-equality-act-a476cfc0-5f1e-417f-a719-9c950421226e.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">introduced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more anti-trans bills than the total number introduced during all of last year. Mississippi\u2019s governor recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/feature\/nbc-out\/mississippi-governor-signs-bill-banning-trans-athletes-school-sports-n1260709\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a bill banning trans athletes from school sports, and Texas is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/msnbc\/texas-legislature-hears-testimony-anti-trans-athletes-bill-rcna2345\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weighing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a similar law. There have also been more than 20 bills introduced this year seeking to criminalize gender-affirming care for trans children. President Biden last week <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/coming-out-day-biden-lgbtq-equality-act-a476cfc0-5f1e-417f-a719-9c950421226e.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> state lawmakers to defeat anti-LGBTQ bills and Congress to pass the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Equality Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which would outlaw <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most Respondents Want to Live Somewhere With Voter Protections<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A majority of respondents (55%) had a positive view on living in a place with strong protections of voting rights and\/or easy vote-by-mail. Meanwhile, 16% had a negative view.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-73292\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/voter-protections.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1327\" height=\"870\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/voter-protections.png 1327w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/voter-protections-300x197.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/voter-protections-1024x671.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/voter-protections-768x504.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1327px) 100vw, 1327px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of June, 17 states had passed 28 new laws making it harder to vote in 2021, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/research-reports\/voting-laws-roundup-may-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Brennan Center for Justice. In Florida, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/04\/30\/992277557\/florida-legislature-approves-election-reform-bill-that-includes-restrictions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that limits the ability to vote by mail and puts restrictions on ballot drop boxes. Florida is one of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/april-may-2021-housing-migration-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most popular<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> migration destinations for people looking to relocate, with Miami, Tampa and Cape Coral regularly attracting scores of out-of-towners. While some states have curbed voter access, others have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/08\/13\/1026588142\/map-see-which-states-have-restricted-voter-access-and-which-states-have-expanded\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expanded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it.
