But if they could go back in time to January 2021, they could have bought a home <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two Teslas for the same price.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put another way, someone could purchase both a Tesla Model Y for about $41,000 and a Model S for $71,000 for less than the $116,000 increase in the median-priced Austin home over the last year. The typical Austin home cost roughly $369,000 in January 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Phoenix, the typical home price increased by $98,750 last year. With the difference, a buyer could purchase a Porsche Panamera for $90,000 and still have enough left to pick up several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.radpowerbikes.com\/collections\/electric-bikes?g_acctid=743-021-7144&amp;g_adgroup=%7BAdGroup%7D&amp;g_adgroupid=129170271496&amp;g_adid=%7BAdId%7D&amp;g_adtype=search&amp;g_campaign=%7BCampaign%7D&amp;g_campaignid=15036460240&amp;g_isproduct=&amp;g_keyword=rad%20electric&amp;g_keywordid=kwd-312683139294&amp;g_network=g&amp;g_productid=%7BProductId%7D&amp;g_term=rad%20electric&amp;g_termid=kwd-312683139294&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQiA64GRBhCZARIsAHOLriL-PeVPEeN3A1gx-NC059ni5714mblQQKOEhYijeKMAkZU1OrPlphcaAnVLEALw_wcB&amp;utm_campaign=TL%20-%20Brand%20Rad%20Power%20Bikes&amp;utm_medium=Brand&amp;utm_source=Google%20Search\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electric bikes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s according to a Redfin analysis of home-price increases from January 2021 to January 2022 in select U.S. metro areas compared with the approximate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.truecar.com\/prices-new\/ford\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MSRP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of various new vehicles. This report doesn\u2019t take loans into account; the comparisons are between the full price of a home and the full price of a car.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Home prices grew more in Austin than all but two other major U.S. metros in 2021 (San Jose, CA and San Diego). Next came Salt Lake City and Los Angeles, followed by Phoenix.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The huge annual price increases are a result of last year\u2019s red-hot housing market. Homebuyers, motivated to move by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freddiemac.com\/pmms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">record-low<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mortgage rates and remote work, bid against each other for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/newly-listed-homes-in-short-supply-down-12-in-january\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">limited supply<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of homes for sale. Bidding wars reached a record high in January, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/newly-listed-homes-in-short-supply-down-12-in-january\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Redfin offers facing competition, leading to a big portion of homes being sold over asking price.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Austin and Phoenix in particular, another reason for skyrocketing prices is the flood of Americans moving in from other parts of the country, especially expensive tech hubs like the Bay Area and Seattle. Thanks to the pandemic-fueled rise in remote work, the number of Redfin.com users looking to move into both Austin and Phoenix from out of town roughly doubled from 2019 to 2021. Those migrants are a big contributor to rising home prices, as their homebuying budgets are significantly<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/migrant-local-budget-difference-homebuyer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bigger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHomes that were selling for $350,000 before the pandemic are going for closer to $500,000,\u201d said Austin Redfin agent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/real-estate-agents\/crystal-lopez\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crystal Lopez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cMy advice to buyers: If you see what seems like a reasonable price, buy it. The value will likely go up. If people wish they would have bought in Austin a year ago, next year they\u2019re going to be wishing they would have bought now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Corvettes in Texas and minivans in Massachusetts<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also compared home-price increases to car prices in other select metro areas:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raleigh, NC: The cost of the typical home increased by $87,500 last year to $400,000. The increase is roughly the cost of a Lexus LX SUV ($88,245).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dallas, TX: The cost of the typical home increased by $65,000 to $380,000. That price incr4ease could buy a Chevy Corvette for $62,195, and the buyer would still have enough left to purchase <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/c\/mountain-bikes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mountain bikes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the whole family.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boston, MA: The cost of the typical home increased by $38,000 to $595,000. The increase is enough to buy a Honda Odyssey for $34,265, with thousands left over to buy top-of-the-line <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nunababy.com\/usa\/revv-rotating-convertible-car-seat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">car seats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the new minivan.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buffalo, NY: The cost of the typical home increased by $25,000 to $200,000. The increase could <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almost <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">buy a Nissan Rogue SUV for $28,075 \u2026 if this<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a year ago, the buyer could have negotiated the price of the car down\u2013<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/dealers-choice-how-buy-car-now-2022-02-09\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unlike now<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oklahoma City, OK: The cost of the typical home increased by $17,750 to $224,000. The increase is big enough to buy a Kia Rio for $17,275.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detroit, MI: The cost of the typical home increased by $8,300 to $163,000. Motor City\u2019s price increase is big enough to buy a Honda XR650L motorcycle for $7,000, plus a few <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gearpatrol.com\/cars\/motorcycles\/g36720364\/best-motorcycle-helmets\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helmets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:
