Wade. The survey also found that more than 60% of homebuyers and sellers want to live somewhere with strong gun control laws and one-third prefer to live in a place that allows classroom discussion of LGBTQ topics.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One in five (19%) homebuyers and sellers would only live in a place where abortion is fully legal, up significantly from 12% last year, before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and gave states the power to ban abortions. An additional 33% would <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prefer<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to live in a place where abortion is fully legal, up from 28% last year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the flip side, 11% would definitely <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">live in a place where abortion is legal, down from 15% a year earlier. An additional 12% would prefer not to live in such a place, down from 17% a year earlier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-75115 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/abortion-chart-1024x851.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"851\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/abortion-chart-1024x851.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/abortion-chart-300x249.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/abortion-chart-768x638.png 768w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/abortion-chart.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s according to a national Redfin-commissioned survey of about 1,000 U.S. residents who recently bought a home or plan to buy or sell a home in the next year, fielded in August 2022. It\u2019s compared with a Redfin survey fielded in August 2021; the 1,000 respondents to that survey moved in the 18 months prior to taking the survey. The results reported here are from a question asking homebuyers and sellers to rank their willingness to live in a place with certain state or local laws on certain political issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s June ruling to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/06\/24\/1102305878\/supreme-court-abortion-roe-v-wade-decision-overturn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overturn Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means the legality of abortions now differs from state to state. With the ruling, states <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/national-news\/articles\/2022-06-24\/roe-v-wade-is-gone-heres-what-that-means\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have the power<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ban abortions after half a century during which women had a constitutional right to abortion. So far, at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2022\/us\/abortion-laws-roe-v-wade.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12 states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have banned most abortions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a lot of Americans, the overturning of Roe v. Wade means the decision about where to live is even more important than it used to be. Last year, the legality of abortion was a less pressing issue for most Americans as abortion was legal in every U.S. state except Texas, which enacted an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/09\/01\/politics\/texas-abortion-supreme-court-sb8-roe-wade\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abortion ban<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in summer 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of homebuyers are moving to Arizona because they like the politics here and\/or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">don\u2019t<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like the politics where they\u2019re coming from,\u201d said Heather Mahmood-Corley, a Redfin agent in Phoenix, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/may-2022-housing-migration-trends\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perennial favorite<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> migration destination for homebuyers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the state voted for Joe Biden in 2020\u2019s presidential election, it is generally more conservative than California and Washington, where a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/app\/profile\/redfin\/viz\/MigrationAnalysisbyRedfinQ2-2022\/MigrationMap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">large portion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of incoming homebuyers hail from.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sixteen percent of respondents to the August 2022 survey said state or local abortion laws are an important factor in deciding where to live, and 1% said they\u2019re the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">important factor. The most commonly cited factors in deciding where to live are cost of living (59% said it\u2019s among the important factors; respondents could select more than one factor), crime\/safety (53%) and home affordability (51%).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Most homebuyers and sellers prefer to live somewhere with strong gun-control laws; voting protections<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other political issues also factor into where American homebuyers and sellers want to live, including state and local gun control laws, voting protections and LGBTQ rights.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Americans deciding to live based on state and local politics could lead to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/06\/us\/politics\/abortion-rights-supreme-court-roe-v-wade.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more divided country<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with people choosing to live in areas where people have similar political views. Relocating to a different state based on personal preferences is also more realistic than it once was: A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/may-2022-housing-migration-trends\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">record share<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of homebuyers are looking to move from one part of the country to another, largely thanks to remote work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Most homebuyers and sellers prefer a place with strong gun control laws<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than one in five (22%) homebuyers and sellers would only live in a place with strong gun control laws, and an additional 39% would prefer to live in such a place. Overall, that\u2019s nearly triple the 10% who would not live in a place with strong gun-control laws and 12% who would prefer not to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-75116 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/political-preferences-chart-610x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/political-preferences-chart-610x1024.png 610w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/political-preferences-chart-179x300.png 179w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/political-preferences-chart-768x1289.png 768w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/political-preferences-chart-915x1536.png 915w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/political-preferences-chart.png 953w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The survey data in this section and each of the following sections is based on the same August 2022 Redfin-commissioned survey mentioned above.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gun control has been in the spotlight as mass shootings and gun violence have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2022\/06\/02\/mass-shootings-in-2022\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the last few years. Though there is federal gun-control legislation, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/07\/30\/us\/gun-control-laws-2022\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including California, New York and Illinois, passed stronger laws this year. State and local gun laws impact some Americans\u2019 decision on where to live because some people advocate for gun-control measures, believing they save lives, others advocate for the right to bear arms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Respondents were more likely to cite gun-safety laws as an important factor in where they live than abortion laws. About one in five (21%) said state or local gun-safety laws are an important factor in choosing where to live, while 3% said they\u2019re the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">important factor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>About half of respondents prefer to live somewhere with gender-affirming care for children; one-third want to live in a place where LGBTQ classroom discussions are allowed<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than half (58%) of respondents prefer to live in a place with laws prohibiting discrimination based on gender or sexual orientation. That\u2019s compared with 18% who prefer <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to live in a place with such laws.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly half (47%) prefer to live in a place where gender-affirming care for children is fully legal. That\u2019s more than double the 21% who prefer <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to live in such a place. Gender-affirming care encompasses a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aamc.org\/news-insights\/what-gender-affirming-care-your-questions-answered\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">range<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of medical interventions designed to support an individual\u2019s gender identity, including counseling and medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relatedly, about one-third (34%) prefer to live somewhere that allows classroom discussion of LGBTQ topics. Just a slightly larger share (37%) take the opposite stance, preferring to live in a place that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prohibits <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">classroom discussion of LGBTQ topics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gender-affirming care for children and classroom discussion of LGBTQ topics have both been hotly debated political issues this year. A Texas directive for its department of family services to investigate families providing their transgender children with gender-affirming care as potential child abuse is in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/09\/01\/us\/texas-gender-affirming-care-minors-agency-employees-court-filing\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legal limbo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some families with transgender children have chosen to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/08\/22\/family-with-transgender-daughter-flees-texas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leave Texas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And more than a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lgbtmap.org\/2022-spotlight-school-bills-report\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dozen states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have introduced legislation like Florida\u2019s recently enacted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox10phoenix.com\/news\/what-is-the-dont-say-gay-bill-what-supporters-critics-say-about-floridas-house-bill-1557\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">House Bill 1557<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which prohibits classroom discussion on sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten through third grade and blocks discussion for older students unless it\u2019s \u201cage appropriate or developmentally appropriate.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy husband and I moved from Tallahassee, FL to Seattle in 2017 partly because Florida\u2019s state government was on a path to undermining protections for LGBTQ people, and we didn\u2019t feel comfortable there outside our close circle of friends,\u201d said Dustin Hand, a Senior Systems Administrator at Redfin. \u201cLiving in a state where the laws don\u2019t protect you is alienating and stressful. When I went places in Florida, I typically waited for a person or business to explicitly say \u2018it\u2019s safe here\u2019 before opening up about who I am and whom I love. Florida\u2019s recent legislation takes an active stance against teaching people about my community and affirms my decision to live in a place where I feel protected being my authentic self.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fifteen percent of respondents said LGBTQ rights are an important factor in choosing where to live, a similar share that feel abortion laws are important. Three percent said LGBTQ rights are the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">important factor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Most homebuyers and sellers prefer living somewhere with strong voting-rights laws\u2013but about 1 in 10 prefer not to<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly two-thirds (62%) of homebuyers and sellers would prefer living somewhere with strong voting-rights protections and\/or easy vote-by-mail. Fifteen percent prefer <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to live in such a place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laws about voting rights have also been at the forefront of politics in recent years. The Supreme Court <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2021\/07\/01\/supreme-court-oks-ballot-harvesting-ban-amid-flurry-voting-laws\/7327138002\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">upheld<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an Arizona ban on ballot collection last year, a controversial decision that went against the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Since then, at least 17 states have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-states\/articles\/2021-07-02\/17-states-have-passed-restrictive-voting-laws-this-year-report-says\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passed laws<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> making it more difficult to vote.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fourteen percent of respondents said voting rights are important in choosing where to live, while 1% said they\u2019re the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">important factor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>About 4 in 10 prefer living in a place where marijuana is legal<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About half (48%) of respondents would prefer living in a place where marijuana is legal, compared with 21% who would prefer <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to live in such a place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recreational marijuana is legal in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-states\/articles\/where-is-marijuana-legal-a-guide-to-marijuana-legalization#:~:text=Is%20Marijuana%20Legal%3F-,A%20Guide%20to%20Marijuana%20Legalization,Washington%2C%20D.C.%2C%20and%20Guam.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19 states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Washington, D.C., and it\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/changing-america\/well-being\/prevention-cures\/3615374-voters-in-these-states-may-soon-decide-whether-to-legalize-marijuana\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the ballot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this year in a handful of others.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fifteen percent said state or local marijuana laws are important in choosing where to live, and 1% said they\u2019re the most important factor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s note: An earlier version of this report misstated the percentage of U.S. homebuyers and sellers who want to live somewhere with legal abortion. 52% of homebuyers and sellers would prefer to live somewhere with legal abortion. <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A recent Redfin survey found that most homebuyers and sellers would prefer living in a place where abortion is legal, up significantly from before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v.
