On the other side of the country, Florida pulled in many conservative people looking to live near people with similar views.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Democratic party has lost more registered voters than the Republican party since 2020 in several states key to the upcoming Senate midterms\u2013but those states have gained Independent voters, who typically lean Democrat. States\u2019 voter registration trends are partly due to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/housing-migration-trends-q3-2022\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wave<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of pandemic-driven relocation, with many remote workers moving from one metro to another in search of affordable home prices and\/or a likeminded community\u2013and bringing their political views with them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-75350 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/voter-registration-swing-states.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/voter-registration-swing-states.png 1424w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/voter-registration-swing-states-300x253.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/voter-registration-swing-states-1024x863.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/voter-registration-swing-states-768x647.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s according to a Redfin analysis of changes in voter registration data in six swing states over the last two years: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, Nevada and Pennsylvania.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This report focuses on what voter registration and migration trends could mean for the Senate elections in Arizona, Nevada and Pennsylvania, which were three of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/2022-election-forecast\/senate\/?cid=rrpromo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most closely matched<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> states as of the days leading up to the midterms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPandemic-fueled migration has changed the political makeup of several key swing states,\u201d said Redfin Deputy Chief Economist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/author\/taylormarr\/page\/3\/\">Taylor Marr<\/a>. \u201cHot-button issues like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/10\/31\/2022-midterms-voters-worried-about-the-economy.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">economy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and crime are playing a big part in this year\u2019s elections, making its outcome difficult to predict. But changes in voter registration, which are largely due to new residents who moved in from other places, offer one clue about how certain states will vote. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/migration-politics-election-2020\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uptick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in registered Democrats in Arizona and Nevada ahead of the 2020 election, due largely to people moving in from California, helped predict that President Biden would win those states.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Increase in Independent voters in Nevada and Arizona could reflect liberals pushed out of expensive California<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Registered Democrats have lost ground in Nevada, but Independents have gained ground. Democrats make up 33% of Nevada\u2019s registered voters, down from 37% in 2020. Republicans make up 29%, down from 32%&#8211;a slightly smaller drop. But Nevada has seen an uptick in voters registered as \u201cother\u201d (unaffiliated with a major political party). \u201cOther\u201d voters make up a plurality (37%) of Nevada\u2019s registered voters, up from 31% in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trend is less extreme in Arizona, where Democrats make up 31% of all registered voters, down slightly from 32% in 2020. Republicans have held steady at 35%. \u201cOthers\u201d make up 35% of Arizona\u2019s registered voters, up from 33% in 2020. Note that shares in this report are rounded to the nearest whole number.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-75354 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/voter-registration-swing-states-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/voter-registration-swing-states-1.png 1350w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/voter-registration-swing-states-1-300x267.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/voter-registration-swing-states-1-1024x910.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/voter-registration-swing-states-1-768x683.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those increases could benefit Democrats because Independent voters\u2013who make up a significant portion of \u201cothers\u201d&#8211;are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/the-report\/articles\/2021-05-21\/independents-exercise-increasing-control-over-democratic-republican-candidates\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more likely to lean left<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 54% of Independents nationwide voted for Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 election, while 41% voted for Republican Donald Trump. Independent voters are unlikely to take much share <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">away <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from Democrats or Republicans because while a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/few-americans-who-identify-as-independent-are-actually-independent-thats-really-bad-for-politics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">growing share<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Americans identify as Independents, most vote in line with one of the major parties.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The uptick in \u201cother\u201d voters likely reflects many of the residents who recently moved into Nevada and Arizona from more liberal places, including newly remote workers. Arizona and Nevada were the second and third most <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bayareaeconomy.org\/files\/pdf\/CAmigrationUSPS.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">popular states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for people moving away from California in 2020. And Redfin\u2019s migration data <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/housing-migration-trends-q3-2022\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Los Angeles was the most popular origin for homebuyers moving to both Phoenix and Las Vegas. The typical home in both Las Vegas and Phoenix costs less than $450,000, roughly half of Los Angeles\u2019 $840,000 median sale price.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The share of California voters registered as \u201cother\u201d has fallen <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by 0.4 percentage points <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">since 2020, a bigger percentage-point decline than Democratic and Republican registrations, suggesting that some of the people who left California are \u201cothers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cConcern about California\u2019s high home prices trumps politics for many people leaving the Golden State. A fair share of liberal Californians have been pushed into places like Las Vegas and Phoenix because they\u2019re prioritizing affordability,\u201d Marr said. \u201cThat doesn\u2019t appear to be true if you only consider that Democrats have lost more voter share than Republicans in Nevada and Arizona\u2013but the increase in voters registered as \u201cother,\u201d especially in Nevada, likely accounts for a big portion of the newcomers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purple (swing) counties in Nevada and Arizona becoming <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/relocation-red-purple-counties-pandemic-election\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more diverse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2021, partly as a result of migration, could also favor the Democratic candidates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>But some of Nevada and Arizona\u2019s new residents are conservative people sorting themselves<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The points in Democrats\u2019 favor could be offset by some people moving to areas that better match their existing political views.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAmericans often sort themselves into neighborhoods where people share similar views, which could help explain why Republicans lost fewer voters than Democrats in Nevada and Arizona,\u201d Marr said. \u201cSome of the people who left California for those states were probably frustrated by local responses to the pandemic, in addition to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/california-migration-politics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expensive homes and high taxes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and ready to move somewhere more conservative.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The share of California voters registered as Republican has dropped 0.3 percentage points since 2020, a slightly smaller percentage drop than \u201cothers,\u201d while the share of registered Democrats has increased 0.8 percentage points.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly half (46%) of U.S. residents would feel hesitant about moving to an area where most residents have different political views from their own, according to an October Redfin survey. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Migration and self-sorting have contributed to Florida becoming more Republican<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-sorting is likely one reason why the Senate race in Florida, traditionally a swing state, is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/polls\/senate\/2022\/florida\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leaning heavily toward<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Republican candidate. Registered Republicans surpassed registered Democrats there last year for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/special-report\/2022\/03\/30\/florida-is-neither-red-nor-blue-but-more-purple-politically\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in history, largely due to migration.\u00a0 Republicans make up 36% of Florida\u2019s registered voters, unchanged from 2020, while Democrats make up 34%, down from 37% in 2020.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sunshine State is pulling in right-leaning people from liberal parts of the country who want to live somewhere that better matches their political viewpoints. Miami and Tampa are two of the most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/housing-migration-trends-q3-2022\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">popular destinations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for relocating homebuyers, and liberal New York and Washington, D.C. are among the most common origins for people moving in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Pennsylvania\u2019s stability in \u201cother\u201d registrations is evidence that its rise in Arizona and Nevada may come from new residents<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pennsylvania, another state with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/polls\/senate\/2022\/pennsylvania\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tight Senate race<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has seen its share of registered Democrats decline slightly since 2020, falling from 47% to 46%. Republicans have held steady at 39% of registered voters and \u201cothers\u201d have held steady at 15%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pennsylvania isn\u2019t a hot migration destination\u2013in fact, more people <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/philadelphia\/2022\/07\/12\/pennsylvania-migration-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">left the state<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than moved in last year. Because it doesn\u2019t attract many new residents from out of state, voter registration trends in Pennsylvania provide a valuable comparison to those in Nevada and Arizona.
