That&#8217;s roughly one-third the pace of growth seen last December.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The median U.S. asking rent rose 4.8% year over year to $1,979 in December\u2014the smallest increase since July 2021\u2014as persistently high rental costs, inflation and economic uncertainty continued to dampen rental demand. Rents grew at more than three times that pace one year earlier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">December also marked the seventh straight month in which annual rent growth slowed and the fourth consecutive month of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">single-digit rent growth following nearly a year of double-digit increases.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Rents fell 1.4% from a month earlier and were down 3.6% from the August peak of $2,053.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRents have room to fall. While they\u2019ve cooled significantly from their peak, it still costs the typical renter 20% more to take on a new lease than it did two years ago,\u201d said Redfin Economics Research Lead Chen Zhao. \u201cAn increase in the number of rentals on the market\u00a0 should also cause rents to ease in the coming months.
