Both states have been magnets for relocating homebuyers for the last several years, largely due to their relatively affordable housing.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roughly two of every five respondents to a recent Redfin survey who live in Texas or Florida would prefer to live in a place where abortion is legal.\u00a0 That\u2019s double the share who would prefer <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to live in a place where abortion is legal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results from Texas and Florida, where abortion is either <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2022\/us\/abortion-laws-roe-v-wade.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">banned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/06\/21\/floridas-abortion-access-hinges-on-conservative-court-redone-by-desantis-00103036\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of being banned, are similar to results from the country as a whole. Like Florida and Texas residents, about two of every five respondents from the U.S. overall would prefer to live in a place where abortion is legal, roughly double the share who would prefer not to.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-76660 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/abortion-chart-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1318\" height=\"719\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/abortion-chart-3.png 1318w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/abortion-chart-3-300x164.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/abortion-chart-3-1024x559.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/abortion-chart-3-768x419.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1318px) 100vw, 1318px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is according to a Redfin-commissioned survey conducted by Qualtrics in May and June 2023. The survey was fielded to 5,079 U.S. residents who either moved in the last year, plan to move in the next year, or rent their home. This report focuses on the 396 respondents who indicated they live in Florida and the 414 in Texas, plus the 419 in California and 336 in New York for comparison. See the bottom of this report for more details on the survey, including each answer choice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Texas, abortions beyond six weeks of pregnancy have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/07\/20\/health\/texas-abortion-ban-infant-mortality-invs\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">banned since 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. All abortions in Texas other than those to protect the mother\u2019s life have been banned since the Supreme Court <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/06\/24\/politics\/dobbs-mississippi-supreme-court-abortion-roe-wade\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overturned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Roe v. Wade, doing away with the federal right to abortion, in June 2022. In Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis approved a bill that would prevent abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, but it\u2019s in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/06\/21\/floridas-abortion-access-hinges-on-conservative-court-redone-by-desantis-00103036\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legal limbo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> until the conservative-leaning Florida Supreme Court hears a case on it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Florida and Texas respondents are more likely to cite affordability than social views as a factor in choosing where to live<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The contradiction between the type of place Florida and Texas respondents say they would prefer to live and where they actually live suggests that for many people, other factors outweigh social preferences in choosing where to reside.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just over 1 in 10 Florida (13%) and Texas (12%) respondents who recently relocated said living in an area better aligned with their views on social issues factored into their move. Affordability was a more common reason, with more than 20% of Florida and Texas respondents citing a lower cost of living. Other reasons more commonly cited than alignment on social issues include a desire for more space\u00a0 and being closer to family. The results are similar for the U.S. as a whole.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDeciding where to live is a compromise, and the housing affordability crisis in many parts of the country means many homebuyers must compromise certain preferences for affordability,\u201d said Redfin Chief Economist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/author\/darylfairweather\/\">Daryl Fairweather<\/a>. \u201cEven though many parts of Florida and Texas have attracted an influx of migrants who have pushed up prices\u00a0 over the last few years, homes there are far less expensive than a coastal city. A person who identifies with the local policies of a place like Seattle or San Francisco may live in a place like Dallas simply because it\u2019s what they can afford.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStill, people often self-sort into areas where their neighbors have similar social and political views,\u201d Fairweather continued. \u201cLiberal people who live in Texas or Florida may choose a home in a neighborhood where they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/rainbow-flag-housing-survey\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">see flags<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that speak to their beliefs, for example.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homebuyers who are moving from one part of the country to another tend to flock from expensive coastal cities to relatively affordable metro areas, a trend that has been going strong for years but intensified during the pandemic because of record-low mortgage rates and remote work. Five of the 10 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/housing-migration-trends-q2-2023\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most popular destinations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Redfin.com users who are moving from one metro to another are in Florida, and two are in Texas. Overall, Florida and Texas gained more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nar.realtor\/blogs\/economists-outlook\/where-people-moved-in-2022\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new residents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than any other states in 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homes in Florida and Texas tend to be much less expensive than the common origins of people moving in. The typical home in Miami, for instance, sells for $515,000, compared with $705,000 in New York, the most common origin of movers to Miami. In Dallas, the typical home sells for $443,000, roughly half the price of Los Angeles, the most common origin for homebuyers moving to Dallas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even before the pandemic, Florida and Texas were popular destinations; they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/stories\/2019\/04\/moves-from-south-west-dominate-recent-migration-flows.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more new residents than any other state in both 2018 and 2019. For the many Americans who moved to those states before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in mid-2022, abortion policies have since changed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor some people who moved to a place like Tampa or Dallas in 2019 or 2020 to get a more affordable home, a part of them may now wish they lived somewhere that aligns better with their views on abortion, since its legality is now in the hands of each individual state,\u201d Fairweather said. \u201cBut it\u2019s not that simple. They probably still appreciate the relatively low cost of living, and may not be able to afford to move to a different state. Beyond finances, many are entrenched in their jobs, their kids\u2019 school and their communities, and those things make it hard to leave.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Florida and Texas respondents more likely to prefer living somewhere with protections for LGBTQ children than without them<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roughly one-third of Florida (37%) and Texas (33%) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">respondents<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would prefer to live in a place where gender-affirming care for children is legal, according to the same Redfin survey. That\u2019s significantly higher than the 21% of Florida <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">respondents<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and 25% of Texas <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">respondents<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who would prefer <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to live in such a place. Gender-affirming care includes transition surgeries and hormone therapies, among other treatments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-76661 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/gender-affirming-care-chart-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1277\" height=\"676\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/gender-affirming-care-chart-3.png 1277w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/gender-affirming-care-chart-3-300x159.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/gender-affirming-care-chart-3-1024x542.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/gender-affirming-care-chart-3-768x407.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1277px) 100vw, 1277px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reality of the legal landscape differs from the preference of many Florida and Texas <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">respondents<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Gender-affirming care for transgender youth is illegal in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/06\/02\/politics\/texas-gender-affirming-care-ban-minors\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Florida as of this year, though the latter\u2019s rule is in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wusfnews.wusf.usf.edu\/health-news-florida\/2023-07-05\/transgender-floridians-remain-limbo-legal-fight-gender-affirming-care-continues\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">limbo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as it experiences legal challenges to its enforcement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A similar share of Florida (36%) and Texas (35%) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">respondents<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would prefer to live in a place that has laws allowing discussion of LGBTQ topics in schools. That\u2019s higher than the 25% and 28%, respectively, who would prefer <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to live in such a place. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-76662 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/classroom-discussino-chart-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1261\" height=\"704\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/classroom-discussino-chart-3.png 1261w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/classroom-discussino-chart-3-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/classroom-discussino-chart-3-1024x572.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/classroom-discussino-chart-3-768x429.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1261px) 100vw, 1261px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in school is banned via a so-called \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d bill in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/desantis-florida-dont-say-gay-ban-684ed25a303f83208a89c556543183cb\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florida<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a similar bill is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/news\/houston-texas\/article\/texas-dont-say-gay-law-18114301.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making its way<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through Texas\u2019 state government.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results from Florida and Texas are comparable to the nation overall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Methodology<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This report is based on results from a\u00a0 Redfin-commissioned survey conducted by Qualtrics in May and June 2023.
