{"id":76872,"date":"2023-10-03T05:00:31","date_gmt":"2023-10-03T12:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/?p=76872"},"modified":"2023-10-02T15:31:47","modified_gmt":"2023-10-02T22:31:47","slug":"lgbtq-homeownership-survey-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/lgbtq-homeownership-survey-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"LGBTQ+ Renters More Likely to Cite Lack of Family Support, Student Loans as Financial Barriers to Homeownership"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong><i>24% of LGBTQ+ renters are unlikely to buy a home due to lack of financial support from family\/friends, compared with 14% of non LGBTQ+ renters, a Redfin survey found.<\/i><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong><i>LGBTQ+ homebuyers are more likely than non LGBTQ+ buyers to work a second job in order to come up with a down payment.<\/i><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong><i>38% of LGBTQ+ respondents said they\u2019d only live in a place with laws ensuring equality based on gender or sexual orientation.<\/i><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LGBTQ+ renters are more likely to face financial barriers to homeownership than <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non LGBTQ+ renters<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to a survey commissioned by Redfin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly one-quarter of LGBTQ+ renters (23.5%) said they\u2019re unlikely to buy a home in the near future due to lack of financial support from family or friends, compared with 14% of non LGBTQ+ renters\u2014the largest gap among the barriers respondents chose from.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LGBTQ+ renters were also more likely than non LGBTQ+ renters to say student loan debt is preventing them from buying a home (18.4% vs 11.4%).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-76873\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/LGBTQ-chart-1-1024x572.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/LGBTQ-chart-1-1024x572.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/LGBTQ-chart-1-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/LGBTQ-chart-1-768x429.png 768w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/LGBTQ-chart-1.png 1333w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s according to a Redfin-commissioned survey conducted by Qualtrics in May and June 2023. The survey was fielded to more than 5,000 U.S. residents. This portion of the report focuses on renter respondents. Subsequent sections focus on recent homebuyers and all respondents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Housing affordability was the top barrier to homeownership for surveyed renters across the board, but LGBTQ+ renters were more likely than <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non LGBTQ+ renters<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to list it as an obstacle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than half (51.2%) of LGBTQ+ renters said they\u2019re unlikely to buy a house in the near future because homes are too expensive, compared with 43.1% of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non LGBTQ+ renters.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Similarly, 44.9% of LGBTQ+ renters cited saving for a down payment as an obstacle, versus 35.7% of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non LGBTQ+ renters<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For virtually every barrier listed, LGBTQ+ respondents were more likely than <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non LGBTQ+ <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">respondents to check the box.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One answer choice bucked the trend: LGBTQ+ renters were <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> likely (13.2%) than the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non LGBTQ+ renters <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(20.1%) to say they\u2019re unlikely to buy a home in the near future simply because they\u2019re not interested in owning one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYoung people are often rewarded financially for fulfilling heteronormative expectations around getting married and having kids,\u201d said Redfin Chief Economist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/author\/darylfairweather\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daryl Fairweather<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cFor example, it\u2019s common for a bride and groom to receive thousands of dollars in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/05\/style\/wedding-cash-gift-fund-etiquette.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cash gifts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when they get married, which they can put toward buying or renovating a home. LGBTQ+ couples, on the other hand, often get married <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2023\/03\/17\/gay-marriage-straight-marriage-statistics\/11473928002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">later<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in life, and may not receive financial support if they\u2019ve been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2023\/06\/02\/lgbtq-homeless-youths-family-rejection\/11535821002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shut out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by their families.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>LGBTQ+ Homebuyers More Likely to Work Second Job to Fund Down Payment<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also surveyed people who bought a home in the past year to see how they saved up for down payments. Recent LGBTQ+ homebuyers were more likely to say they worked a second job (29.1% vs 18.3% of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non LGBTQ+ buyers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), sold stock investments (18.5% vs 13.8%) and sold cryptocurrency investments (14.8% vs 8.5%). They were also more likely to save directly from paychecks (46.6% vs 36.5%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-76874\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/lgbqt-second-job-chart-1024x571.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/lgbqt-second-job-chart-1024x571.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/lgbqt-second-job-chart-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/lgbqt-second-job-chart-768x428.png 768w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/lgbqt-second-job-chart.png 1333w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wage gap is likely one reason LGBTQ+ buyers are more likely to take on a second job to fund their down payment; LGBTQ+ workers earn about 90 cents for every dollar the typical worker earns, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/the-wage-gap-among-lgbtq-workers-in-the-united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Human Rights Campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent LGBTQ+ homebuyers were less likely than non LGBTQ+ buyers to say they put the proceeds from the sale of another home toward their down payment (23.3% vs 29.5%). That\u2019s in part because LGBTQ+ Americans are less likely to own homes. The LGBTQ+ homeownership rate is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban.org\/urban-wire\/three-trends-lgbtq-homeownership-gaps-underscore-research-and-policy-needs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">51%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, compared with 71% for people who identify as both straight and cisgender. LGBTQ+ Americans skew younger, which is one reason for the disparity, but the income gap may also be at play.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>38% of LGBTQ+ Respondents Say They\u2019d Only Live Somewhere With Protections Against Discrimination Based on Gender, Sexual Orientation\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly two of every five LGBTQ+ respondents (37.9%) said they would only live in a place that has laws ensuring equality based gender or sexual orientation, compared with 16.3% of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non LGBTQ+ respondents<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. LGBTQ+ respondents were nearly three times as likely to say they\u2019d only live somewhere with laws allowing discussion of LGBTQ topics in schools (33% vs 10.4%). And one-quarter of LGBTQ+ participants (25.9%) indicated that they would only live in a place where gender affirming care for children is fully legal, versus 11% of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non LGBTQ+ respondents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-76875\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/lgbtq-chart-laws-1024x559.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/lgbtq-chart-laws-1024x559.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/lgbtq-chart-laws-300x164.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/lgbtq-chart-laws-768x419.png 768w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/lgbtq-chart-laws.png 1368w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Racial diversity, strong gun control laws and legal abortion were also more likely to be \u201cmusts\u201d for LGBTQ+ respondents than for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non LGBTQ+ respondents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a time when LGBTQ+ rights are becoming increasingly restricted, it\u2019s not surprising that many LGBTQ+ Americans only want to live in places with legal protections. Lawmakers in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/graphics\/USA-HEALTHCARE\/TRANS-BILLS\/zgvorreyapd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">37<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> states have introduced at least 142 bills to limit gender-affirming healthcare this year, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2022\/us\/abortion-laws-roe-v-wade.html#:~:text=Twenty%2Done%20states%20ban%20abortion,overturned%20the%20decision%20last%20year.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> states now ban abortion or restrict it earlier in pregnancy than the standard set by Roe v. Wade. In April, Florida <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/desantis-florida-dont-say-gay-ban-684ed25a303f83208a89c556543183cb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expanded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its so-called \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d law, which bars lessons on gender identity and sexual orientation in the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A separate Redfin <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/survey-black-hispanic-lgbtq-housing-discrimination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on this same survey found that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22% LGBTQ+ people who recently moved believe they were discriminated against based on their sexual orientation during their most recent home search, and another 19% think they may have been discriminated against.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Methodology<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This report is based on a Redfin-commissioned survey conducted by Qualtrics in May and June 2023. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The survey was fielded to more than 5,000 U.S. residents <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who either moved in the last year, plan to move in the next year, or rent their home<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
