The survey was fielded to more than 5,000 U.S. residents. This report focuses on the roughly 1,000 respondents who bought a home in the last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGetting ghosted by your date is stressful, but purchasing a home in today\u2019s market comes with its own unique set of anxieties,\u201d said Redfin Chief Economist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/author\/darylfairweather\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daryl Fairweather<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cBuyers are increasingly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/investors.redfin.com\/news-events\/press-releases\/detail\/976\/redfin-reports-home-purchases-fell-through-at-the-highest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ghosting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sellers as housing costs climb, and high mortgage rates are prompting many homeowners to stay put instead of selling\u2014meaning house hunters have a record low number of homes to swipe right on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-76878\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/dating-chart-1024x709.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"554\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/dating-chart-1024x709.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/dating-chart-300x208.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/dating-chart-768x532.png 768w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/dating-chart.png 1302w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the life events respondents had to choose from, there were just two that respondents found more nerve wracking than buying a home: 57% said divorce is more stressful and 56% said finding a new job is more stressful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With mortgage rates at the highest level in more than two decades, many of the people moving today are relocating not because they want to, but because they have to\u2014often due to a major life event like a divorce or a new job.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the U.S. unemployment rate remains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/inflation-jobs-economy-interest-rates-unemployment-recession-7b94da1534f775b08939d184e53ca635\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, thousands of workers have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/layoffs-sweeping-the-us-these-are-the-companies-making-cuts-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">laid off<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and forced to find new jobs in the past year. Others have had to move because their employer asked them to go back to the office. One in 10 U.S. home sellers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/moving-return-to-office-survey-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cited<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a return-to-office policy as a reason for their upcoming relocation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Millennials, Gen X Are Most Likely to Think Homebuying Is More Stressful Than Dating. Baby Boomers Are Most Likely to Think the Opposite.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millennials and Gen Xers were most likely to emphasize the anxieties of homebuying, with nearly two-thirds saying it\u2019s more stressful than dating. Baby Boomers and Gen Zers were most likely to say <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dating <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is more stressful. Baby Boomers recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nar.realtor\/newsroom\/baby-boomers-overtake-millennials-as-largest-generation-of-home-buyers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overtook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> millennials as the largest homebuying generation, in large part because they\u2019ve spent years building home equity, making it easier to buy another home even when mortgage rates are high.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Older generations were most likely to emphasize the stress of divorce; 67% of Baby Boomers said divorce is more stressful than homebuying, compared with 61% of millennials and 48% of Gen Z respondents. Baby Boomers are more likely to have experienced divorce than, say, Gen Z, simply because they\u2019re older. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/08\/05\/health\/boomers-divorce-living-alone-wellness-cec\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also shows that the divorce rate for people over 50 has been on the rise, fueling an uptick in the number of Boomers living alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>White Homebuyers Say Buying a Home Is More Stressful Than Getting Into College. Black Buyers Say the Opposite.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than two-thirds of white respondents (64%) said buying a home is more stressful than getting into college, but the results were flipped for Black respondents, a majority of whom (57%) said getting into college is more stressful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Americans face much higher financial barriers to both homeownership and college admission than white Americans on average, and frequently face <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/survey-black-hispanic-lgbtq-housing-discrimination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discrimination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during both processes. Roughly one-quarter of Black adults <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/01\/28\/student-loan-holders-are-more-likely-to-be-women-and-people-of-color.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">say<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they carry student loan debt, compared with 14% of white adults. Student loan payments are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/10\/01\/how-the-restart-of-student-loan-payments-could-shake-the-economy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resuming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for millions of Americans this month as the pandemic-era pause comes to an end, which will push homeownership further out of reach for some borrowers as their monthly costs climb.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Which Is More Stressful?
