{"id":77717,"date":"2024-04-05T05:00:32","date_gmt":"2024-04-05T12:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/?p=77717"},"modified":"2024-04-04T17:29:26","modified_gmt":"2024-04-05T00:29:26","slug":"homebuying-sacrifices-survey-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/homebuying-sacrifices-survey-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Skipping Meals and Working Overtime: The Sacrifices Americans Make to Afford Housing"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong><i>Half of homeowners and renters struggle to afford their housing payments, a recent Redfin survey found.<\/i><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong><i>Roughly 1 in 5 people who struggle to afford housing have skipped meals and\/or worked extra hours to help cover costs, while about 1 in 6 have delayed medical care.<\/i><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong><i>Skipping vacations was the most common sacrifice among white and Asian respondents, while Black respondents were most likely to work extra hours.<\/i><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong><i>A surprisingly high share of millennials\u2014most of whom are not retired\u2014have dipped into retirement savings so they can afford housing.<\/i><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Half of U.S. homeowners and renters (49.9%) sometimes, regularly or greatly struggle to afford their housing payments\u2014and many are making big sacrifices to cover their costs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s according to a Redfin-commissioned survey conducted by Qualtrics in February 2024. The nationally representative survey was fielded to 2,995 U.S. homeowners and renters. Most of this report focuses on the 1,494 respondents who indicated that they sometimes, regularly or greatly struggle to afford regular rent or mortgage payments. The relevant question was: \u201cWhich of the following, if any, changes or sacrifices did you make in the past year to afford your monthly housing costs, including mortgage or rent, insurance, parking heating\/cooling\/electricity or homeownership association dues?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common sacrifice was taking no or fewer vacations. More than one-third of homeowners and renters (34.5%) who struggle to afford housing indicated that they skipped vacations in the past year in order to afford their monthly costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-77718\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/final-sacrifices-chart-1024x650.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"850\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/final-sacrifices-chart-1024x650.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/final-sacrifices-chart-300x191.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/final-sacrifices-chart-768x488.png 768w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/final-sacrifices-chart-1536x976.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/final-sacrifices-chart.png 1889w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But many people who struggle to afford housing made more serious sacrifices: 22% skipped meals and 20.7% worked extra hours at their job. A similar share (20.6%) sold belongings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than one of every six people (17.9%) who struggle to afford housing borrowed money from friends\/family, and 17.6% dipped into their retirement savings. Over one in seven (15.6%) delayed or skipped medical treatments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHousing has become so financially burdensome in America that some families can no longer afford other essentials, including food and medical care, and have been forced to make major sacrifices, work overtime and ask others for money so they can cover their monthly costs,\u201d said Redfin Economics Research Lead <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/author\/chen-zhao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chen Zhao<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cFortunately, the country\u2019s leaders are starting to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2024\/02\/29\/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-new-actions-to-boost-housing-supply-and-lower-housing-costs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pay attention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and homebuyers may get a reprieve in June if the Federal Reserve <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/march-2024-fed-meeting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cuts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> interest rates, which would bring down the cost of getting a mortgage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mortgage payments are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/housing-market-update-listings-sales-stumble-easter-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">near<\/a> their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all-time high<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to rising prices and elevated mortgage rates: The median U.S. home sale price is up about 5% from a year ago, and mortgage rates are hovering around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freddiemac.com\/pmms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not far from the 23-year high of roughly 8% hit in October. The typical household earns roughly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/income-needed-to-afford-home-february-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$30,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> less than it needs to afford the median-priced home, and rents are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/redfin-rental-report-february-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the rise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Biden last month <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2024\/03\/07\/fact-sheet-president-biden-announces-plan-to-lower-housing-costs-for-working-families\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unveiled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a number of initiatives aimed at making housing more affordable. His proposal includes tax credits for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/starter-home-affordability-february-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first-time buyers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and sellers of starter homes, along with a plan to build more than 2 million homes. Housing affordability is top of mind for Americans; more than half of U.S. homeowners and renters say housing affordability is impacting who they plan to vote for in the upcoming presidential election, according to a Redfin <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/housing-affordability-election-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> covering additional findings from the February survey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>14% of Millennials Dipped Into Retirement Savings to Afford Housing Payments<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly one of every seven millennials (13.5%) who struggle to afford their housing payments have dipped into retirement savings to cover their monthly costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most millennials are not retired, but housing affordability has become so <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/share-of-homes-affordable-new-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that some are resorting to outside-the-box strategies to cover expenses. Millennials are the largest adult generation, and many are aging into their homebuying years at a time when home prices and mortgage rates are high. By some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/02\/09\/millennials-retirement-outlook-may-be-worse-than-older-generations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">measures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, millennials are behind their parents\u2019 generation when it comes to retirement readiness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The income needed to afford a starter home is up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/starter-home-affordability-february-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8% <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from a year ago, prompting some young buyers to use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/gen-z-millennial-down-payment-family-help\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">family money<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to cover their down payment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baby boomers who struggle to afford housing were most likely to dip into retirement funds, with over one-quarter (27.5%) saying they did so to cover housing expenses. That makes sense, as many baby boomers are already retired, and it\u2019s common for retirees to put their retirement savings toward housing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roughly 1 in 6 (15.5%) Gen Xers who struggle to afford housing dipped into retirement savings to afford monthly housing costs. The share was lowest among Gen Z respondents (6.5%), many of whom don\u2019t yet have retirement savings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IRS typically taxes people who make withdrawals from their retirement accounts before the age of 59.5, but makes an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/retirement-plans\/plan-participant-employee\/retirement-topics-exceptions-to-tax-on-early-distributions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exception<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for qualified first-time homebuyers, who are allowed to borrow up to $10,000 tax free.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broken down by race\/ethnicity, white respondents who struggle to afford housing were most likely (20.7%) to use retirement savings to cover housing costs, followed by Asian\/Pacific Islander respondents (14%), Hispanic\/LatinX respondents (13.6%) and Black respondents (12.6%).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Black Respondents Most Likely to Work Extra Hours to Afford Housing; Gen Zers Most Likely Sell Belongings<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While pressing pause on vacations was the most common sacrifice for respondents as a whole, it wasn\u2019t the top answer choice for every demographic. People of color and younger generations often made more serious sacrifices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, Black respondents who struggle to afford housing were most likely to say they worked extra hours (25.9%) to cover their monthly costs, while Hispanic respondents were most likely to say that they sold belongings (28.2%). Skipping vacations was the most common answer among Asian\/Pacific Islander respondents (43.8%) and white respondents (39.6%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black millennials are half as likely to own homes as white millennials, according to a separate Redfin <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/homeownership-rate-black-millennials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though the racial homeownership gap exists across every generation due to decades of racist policies and discrimination.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it came to age groups, skipping vacations was the top choice for baby boomers (42.8%), Gen Xers (36.8%) and millennials (31.3%) who struggle to afford housing. But for Gen Zers, the most common sacrifices were working extra hours, selling belongings and skipping meals, all of which clocked in at roughly 27%.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>White Respondents, Baby Boomers and Homeowners Most Likely to Afford Housing Easily<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the roughly 2,995 people who took the survey, half (50.1%) said they can easily afford their regular rent or mortgage payments, and half (49.9%) said they sometimes, regularly or greatly struggle to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the results vary by demographic. For example, 54.5% of white respondents said they can easily afford their housing payments, compared with 37.8% of Hispanic\/LatinX respondents, 46.6% of Black respondents and 47.4% of Asian\/Pacific Islander respondents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baby boomers were most likely to say they easily afford housing payments (61.9%), followed by Gen Xers (48.7%), millennials (40.2%) and Gen Zers (26.9%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And homeowners (59.9%) were roughly twice as likely as renters (30.8%) to indicate that they easily afford their housing payments.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Half of homeowners and renters struggle to afford their housing payments, a recent Redfin survey found.
