{"id":78707,"date":"2024-10-15T05:00:36","date_gmt":"2024-10-15T12:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/?p=78707"},"modified":"2024-10-14T15:08:53","modified_gmt":"2024-10-14T22:08:53","slug":"homebuying-delay-election-survey-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/homebuying-delay-election-survey-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearly A Quarter of Prospective First-Time Homebuyers are Holding Off Until After the Election: Redfin Survey"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23% of buyers who are likely to purchase their first home in the next year said they are waiting until after the election.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26.1% said they are waiting to see if Harris\u2019 housing affordability plan goes into effect; 15.9% are waiting to see if Trump\u2019s housing affordability plan is enacted.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personal finances and timing are the most common reasons cited for delaying a home purchase, with other reasons including future interest rate cuts, immigration policies and affordable housing initiatives.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly a quarter of soon-to-be first-time homebuyers are waiting until after the election before buying a home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s according to a Redfin-commissioned survey conducted by Ipsos in September 2024. The survey was fielded to 1,802 U.S. homeowners and renters aged 18-65. This report focuses on 491 respondents who indicated they will purchase their first home in the next year. We asked: \u201cWhy not now or before then?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBuying a home can be scary, especially if it\u2019s your first time, you\u2019re worried about the election and you\u2019re not sure if the economy is going to get better or worse,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/real-estate-agents\/l-garcia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lindsay Garcia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Redfin premier agent in Fort Lauderdale, FL. \u201cBuyers are uncertain about what will happen in the election\u2014especially first-time homebuyers. We have to remember, the market is cyclical. The economy will keep improving and when we get past the election, buyers will start to feel more confident again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/home-sales-turnover-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.5%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of U.S. homes changed hands in the first eight months of 2024, the lowest turnover rate in decades, with the market remaining <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/home-sales-lowest-since-pandemic-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sluggish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even as mortgage rates started falling over the summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most-common reasons respondents gave for delaying a purchase simply had to do with timing, with 30.3% indicating that they are \u201con track in my financial savings to purchase a home in the next year, just not right now.\u201d The next most-cited reason (28.9%) was that waiting longer \u201cworks better for me (and my partner\/family).\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-m4yTt\" style=\"width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;\" title=\"Reasons Prospective First-Time Homebuyers Are Waiting To Purchase A Home\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/m4yTt\/10\/\" height=\"1049\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" aria-label=\"Table\" data-external=\"1\"><\/iframe><script type=\"text\/javascript\">!function(){\"use strict\";window.addEventListener(\"message\",(function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll(\"iframe\");for(var t in a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"])for(var r=0;r<e.length;r++)if(e[r].contentWindow===a.source){var i=a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"][t]+\"px\";e[r].style.height=i}}}))}();\n<\/script><\/p>\n<h2><b>First-time house hunters waiting to see if candidates\u2019 policies are enacted\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than a quarter (26.1%) of soon-to-be first-time homebuyers are waiting to see if Kamala Harris\u2019 housing plan\u2014which includes $25,000 in downpayment assistance for some buyers\u2014goes into effect before they purchase a home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly one in three respondents who said they are voting for Harris (32.7%) chose this option, compared to 21.6% of respondents who said they are voting for Donald Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly one in six (15.9%) first-time house hunters said they are waiting to see if Trump\u2019s plans for tackling \u201cissues with affordable housing\u201d are enacted.\u201d One in four (25%) Trump voters chose this option, compared to 11.5% of Harris voters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly one in eight (12.2%) respondents said they are immigrants or visa-holders who are worried \u201cabout being able to stay in the country long term if immigration policies become less favorable\u201d after the election.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Interest rate cuts and government assistance also being weighed<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prospective first-time homebuyers are also considering affordability in their decision, with 18.3% \u201cwaiting for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates in the next year, which in turn should lower mortgage rates.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exact same share of respondents (18.3%) said they are \u201cwaiting to see if the federal government enacts affordable housing initiatives,\u201d compared to 23.6% who said they are waiting to see if their \u201ccity\/state will push for more affordable housing initiatives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twelve percent of respondents said they are waiting to hear back about an application for government assistance, while 8.8% were waiting to hear about an application for assistance from a non-profit organization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>23% of buyers who are likely to purchase their first home in the next year said they are waiting until after the election.\u00a0 26.1% said they are waiting to see if Harris\u2019 housing affordability plan goes into effect; 15.9% are waiting to see if Trump\u2019s housing affordability plan is enacted.
