About one-quarter think rates will fall if Harris is elected. <\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just under two in five (38%) U.S. residents who had already voted as of November 1 say housing affordability impacted their presidential pick. This is according to a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redfin-commissioned survey conducted by Ipsos on Oct. 31-Nov. 1, 2024. The nationally representative survey was fielded to 1,002 U.S. adults. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kamala Harris voters were much more likely than Donald Trump voters to say housing affordability factored into their decision: 43% of respondents who already voted for Harris say affordability impacted their pick, compared to 29% of respondents who already voted for Trump.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, people who already voted\u2013regardless of who they voted for\u2013were less likely to factor housing affordability into their presidential decision than most other issues we asked about. Eleven of the 14 issues listed in the survey were more likely than housing affordability to impact votes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The leading concern for early voters was<\/span><b> the economy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(63%), followed by <\/span><b>\u00a0inflation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (59%), and <\/span><b>protecting democracy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (56%). Next came<\/span><b> immigration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (55%), <\/span><b>healthcare<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (52%), <\/span><b>crime and safet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y (47%), <\/span><b>access to abortion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (45%), <\/span><b>U.S. involvement in foreign wars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (41%), <\/span><b>freedom of speech<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (41%), <\/span><b>gun violence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (40%) and the <\/span><b>United States\u2019 standing in the world <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(38%).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only issues less likely to impact early voters\u2019 presidential pick than housing affordability were <\/span><b>climate change<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (36%) and <\/span><b>access to gender affirming care<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (19%). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-78802 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/unnamed-25-825x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"825\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/unnamed-25-825x1024.png 825w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/unnamed-25-242x300.png 242w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/unnamed-25-768x954.png 768w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/unnamed-25-1237x1536.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/unnamed-25.png 1240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 825px) 100vw, 825px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While voters who have already cast their ballot were more likely to cite issues other than housing affordability, it\u2019s still an important factor for many voters. It has become much more difficult to afford to buy or rent a home since the pandemic-driven moving boom, which drove up housing costs. It\u2019s worth noting that homes in traditionally blue parts of the country are typically quite expensive, which is likely one reason Harris voters were more likely to say housing affordability impacted their vote than Trump voters.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>For Local Races, 40% of Early Voters Say Housing Affordability Impacted Their Decision<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Housing affordability ranks higher when it comes to voting for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elected officials than for president.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two in five (40%) U.S. residents who have already voted say housing affordability factored into their pick for local races.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crime and safety was the most important consideration, with 50% of early voters saying it impacted their decision on who to vote for. It\u2019s followed by the economy (46%) and inflation (41%), then housing affordability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving on to local ballot measures, 37% of people who already voted say housing affordability factored into their vote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The economy was the most important issue in regards to local ballot measures\/proposals\/initiatives, with nearly half (47%) of those who already cast a ballot saying it impacted their decisions. That\u2019s according to the same Redfin-commissioned survey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-78803 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/unnamed-26-1024x703.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"703\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/unnamed-26-1024x703.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/unnamed-26-300x206.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/unnamed-26-768x527.png 768w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/unnamed-26-1536x1054.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/unnamed-26.png 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, U.S. residents are more likely to think mortgage rates will <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if Harris becomes president; 32% think rates will rise if Harris wins, while 28% think rates will rise if Trump wins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people are torn; one-quarter of respondents (25%) say they don\u2019t know what will happen with mortgage rates if Trump wins, and roughly the same share (26%) don\u2019t know what will happen with rates if Harris wins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The survey findings in this report are from a Redfin-commissioned survey conducted by Ipsos on Oct. 31-Nov. 1, 2024. The nationally representative survey was fielded to 1,002 U.S. adults.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mortgage rates are primarily influenced by economic conditions and the Federal Reserve, which is politically independent, though Congress and the president of the United States are\u00a0 able to influence the long-term direction of the economy through policy changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mortgage rates rose to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mortgagenewsdaily.com\/mortgage-rates\/30-year-fixed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the first time since early July last week, causing homebuyers to lose <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/housing-market-update-homebuyers-lose-purchasing-power-october-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$33,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in purchasing power. Of those 442, 225 said they voted for Kamala Harris and 175 said they voted for Donald Trump.
