Of them, more than a third (36%) are considering moving to another country, and 26% are thinking of moving to a different state. This is according to a Redfin-commissioned survey conducted by Ipsos on November 7-8, 2024; the nationally representative survey was fielded to 1,005 U.S. adults.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But 21% of all respondents say they are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">likely to move now that the election is over.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-78827 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Screenshot-2024-11-12-140539.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"617\" height=\"795\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Screenshot-2024-11-12-140539.png 617w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Screenshot-2024-11-12-140539-233x300.png 233w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 617px) 100vw, 617px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Democrats are more likely than Republicans to say the election, in which Donald Trump defeated Kamala Harris, upped their likelihood of moving: 28% of Democrats are now more likely to move, compared to 16% of Republicans. Seventeen percent of Democrats are now less likely to consider moving, compared with 20% of Republicans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young people, renters, and those earning less than $50,000 per year were more likely to say they\u2019d consider moving now that the election is over.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than one-third (34%) of 18-34 year olds said they\u2019re more likely to move after the election, compared to 23% of 35-54 year olds and 9% of people over 55.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly three in 10 (29%) renters are more likely to consider moving now that the election is over, compared to 15% of homeowners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than a quarter (27%) of respondents earning under $50,000 are more likely to consider moving now\u2013and another 27% of those respondents are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">likely to consider moving. Twenty percent of people who earn between $50,000 and $100,00 and 20% of people who earn more than $100,000 are more likely to move post-election; 22% of middle-income earners and 17% of higher-income earners are less likely to move.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Roughly 1 in 5 U.S. Respondents Who Are Considering Moving Say The Election Results Make Them More Likely to Buy a Home<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the respondents who said they\u2019re more likely to move post-election, roughly one in five (17%)\u00a0 say the results of the election have made them more likely to consider buying a new home. Just over one in 10 (12%) say the results have made them more likely to consider <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selling<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> their current home. Roughly the same share\u201313%\u2013are now more likely to rent a home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly one-quarter of prospective first-time homebuyers were waiting until after the election to buy a home, according to a separate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/homebuying-delay-election-survey-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redfin-commissioned survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fielded in October. Roughly one in six respondents to that survey <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said they were waiting to see if Trump\u2019s plans for tackling \u201cissues with affordable housing\u201d are enacted before buying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some house hunters were waiting for the political and financial uncertainty surrounding the election to pass before making a big purchase. Redfin agents in several different parts of the country said in October that many would-be buyers were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/housing-market-update-housing-market-active-election-high-mortgage-rates\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sitting on the sidelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> until post-election, and expected activity to pick up around mid-November.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>36% of People Who May Move Post-Election Are Considering a Different Country; 26% a Different State<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned above, more than one-third (36%) of the respondents who said they\u2019re now more likely to move are thinking of moving to a different country. More respondents chose \u201ca different country\u201d than any other type of location.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roughly one-quarter (26%) are now thinking of moving to a different state. Just over one in 10 (12%) are considering a different metro area within their current state.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broken down by political affiliation, 59% of the Democrats who said they\u2019re more likely to move now that the election is over say the results have made them consider a different country. Twenty-six percent of Democrats are considering a different state. Just 8% of the Republicans who are more likely to move said they\u2019d consider an international move, while 21% would consider a different state.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/11\/04\/travel\/election-moving-to-canada-donald-trump-hillary-clinton.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not new<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Americans to say they\u2019d move abroad if their preferred presidential candidate loses, the desire to move to a different state or neighborhood may be more pronounced this year. The U.S. has become increasingly polarized, with certain laws\u2013particularly those concerning <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/us\/abortion-laws-roe-v-wade.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women\u2019s health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013differing from state to state.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a local level, many Americans want to live in neighborhoods where people have similar political views: A separate Redfin-commissioned survey found that 27% of U.S. residents would be hesitant to live in an area where most residents don\u2019t share their political views.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Methodology<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This report focuses on responses to the following questions from the survey:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the 2024 U.S. presidential election, which of the below best describes your likelihood to consider moving to a new home?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which of the following does the result of the presidential election make you more likely to consider?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first question, respondents could choose \u201cI am much more likely to consider moving,\u201d \u201cI am somewhat more likely to consider moving,\u201d \u201cMy likelihood to consider moving has not changed,\u201d \u201cI am somewhat less likely to consider moving,\u201d and \u201cI am much less likely to consider moving.\u201d For this report, we grouped the first two options as \u201cmore likely\u201d, and grouped the last two options as \u201cless likely.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 1,005 U.S. residents surveyed, there were 416 Republicans and 381 Democrats, 486 men and 509 women, and 302 people aged 18-34, 347 people aged 35-54, and 356 people aged 55+. 553 respondents were homeowners and 330 were renters; 427 reported earning under $50,000, 379 earn between $50,000 and $100,000, and 199 earn over $100,000.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please note that for question #2, there were 100 responses from Democrats and 56 responses from Republicans.
