That\u2019s down from 45.3% a year earlier, marking the largest year-over-year decline since the third quarter of 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By comparison, the Hispanic homeownership rate inched up slightly (to 48.8% from 48.5% a year earlier), and there were small declines in both the non-Hispanic white homeownership rate (to 74% from 74.4%) and the Asian\/Native Hawaiian\/Pacific Islander homeownership rate (to 62.1% from 62.8%).<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-8nLgw\" style=\"width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;\" title=\"Black Homeownership Rate Falls to Lowest Since 2021\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/8nLgw\/6\/\" height=\"422\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" aria-label=\"Line chart\" data-external=\"1\"><\/iframe><script type=\"text\/javascript\">!function(){\"use strict\";window.addEventListener(\"message\",function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll(\"iframe\");for(var t in a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"])for(var r,i=0;r=e[i];i++)if(r.contentWindow===a.source){var d=a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"][t]+\"px\";r.style.height=d}}})}();\n<\/script><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n\u201cRising unemployment is one likely reason the homeownership rate for Black families has dropped recently,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said Redfin Chief Economist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/author\/darylfairweather\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daryl Fairweather<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThe recent wave of federal layoffs hit Black households <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/janicegassam\/2025\/08\/04\/no-friends-in-the-pipeline-why-300000-black-women-were-pushed-out-of-the-workforce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">badly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because government jobs have historically been an avenue of upward mobility for Black workers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DEI programs have also been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/corporate-dei-policy-changes-pull-back-33fdab87?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=ASWzDAg3FUk_KN-dnQjbUakzAOs_Du6CKoiCQwK3DF9M6aq5SJVmW6FAbWUeztXOurE%3D&amp;gaa_ts=68b0a018&amp;gaa_sig=C3DJnJ-etH2h_BFjrXwwZ1VjJdoDuCc9aINFFOVR8lxYlSeBRVOmGeAtfbfD2pKtcZ4DaNGKCq7AvbkFEFVP2g%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dismantled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in workplaces across the private and public sectors, which may have resulted in fewer Black employees being hired or promoted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Black\/African American unemployment rate was 7.2% as of July, up from 6.3% a year earlier and the highest level since October 2021. Unemployment rates for other groups were relatively steady, with the Hispanic\/Latino unemployment rate dipping to 5% from 5.3%, the white unemployment rate dipping to 3.7% from 3.8%, and the Asian unemployment rate rising to 3.9% from 3.7%.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-RI6xc\" style=\"width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;\" title=\"The Black Unemployment Rate Spiked in 2025\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/RI6xc\/8\/\" height=\"455\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" aria-label=\"Line chart\" data-external=\"1\"><\/iframe><script type=\"text\/javascript\">!function(){\"use strict\";window.addEventListener(\"message\",function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll(\"iframe\");for(var t in a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"])for(var r,i=0;r=e[i];i++)if(r.contentWindow===a.source){var d=a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"][t]+\"px\";r.style.height=d}}})}();\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black\/African American women, in particular, have seen an especially large jump in joblessness, with their unemployment rate rising to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/LNS14000032\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6.3%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in July from 5.5% a year earlier. The unemployment rate for Black\/African American men was higher but saw a less dramatic jump\u2014to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/LNS14000031\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 6.6% a year earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2024 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nar.realtor\/sites\/default\/files\/2025-03\/2025-snapshot-of-race-and-home-buying-in-america-03-17-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the National Association of Realtors found that 33% of Black\/African American homebuyers were single women, far outpacing single men, who represented 12% of Black\/African American buyers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rising home prices, high mortgage rates and uncertainty surrounding the economy and job market have made it difficult for many Americans to break into homeownership in recent years, but one of those factors is now easing up. The average 30-year-fixed mortgage rate has fallen below 6.5% from a peak of over 7% at the start of the year, which appears to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/housing-market-update-homebuying-demand-ticks-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bringing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at least some homebuyers off of the sidelines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBehind the decline in Black homeownership are families who aren\u2019t building stability and wealth through housing,\u201d said Fairweather. \u201cFor Black households who feel locked out of the American dream, the good news is that affordability is improving as mortgage rates come down, home prices are growing at less than half the pace they were a year ago, and buyers have been gaining <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/sellers-vs-buyers-price-impact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negotiating power<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are hoping to buy a home but are not sure you can afford one, you may qualify for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/guides\/first-time-home-buyer-programs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">homebuyer assistance program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
