Another 17% say they\u2019re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a little less likely<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, up from 8% a month earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just over half (51%) say the shutdown hasn\u2019t changed their likelihood of making a major purchase, down from 64% in early October.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"datawrapper-vis-9B0Q7\" style=\"min-height: 434px;\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\" defer src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/9B0Q7\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" data-target=\"#datawrapper-vis-9B0Q7\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/9B0Q7\/full.png\" alt=\"To what extent, if any, does the government shutdown affect your likelihood of making a major purchase, such as a car or a home? (Table)\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is according to a Redfin-commissioned survey conducted by Ipsos on November 3-4, 2025. The nationally representative survey was fielded to 1,005 U.S. residents. Results are compared to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/delaying-home-car-purchase-government-shutdown\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fielded on October 3 at the start of the government shutdown, and to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/survey-job-security-2025\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fielded from August 7-14 about job security. See table at the bottom of the report for more information about the survey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The federal government shut down on October 1, after Congress failed to agree on a new budget for the 2026 fiscal year, forcing hundreds of thousands of federal workers to go without pay and disrupting some state and local programs that rely on federal funding. The stalemate has rattled economists and consumers alike. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the shutdown could shave <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/sustainable-finance-reporting\/federal-shutdown-could-cost-us-economy-up-14-billion-2025-10-29\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up to $14 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> off the U.S. economy and temporarily slow growth by as much as two percentage points if it extends through the end of November.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>21% of Americans say they are delaying a major purchase due to the shutdown<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One in five Americans (21%) now say they\u2019re delaying a major purchase, up from 17% in early October, while 15% say they\u2019ve canceled plans altogether, up from 7%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"datawrapper-vis-oJflS\" style=\"min-height: 417px;\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\" defer src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/oJflS\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" data-target=\"#datawrapper-vis-oJflS\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/oJflS\/full.png\" alt=\"How, if at all, does the government shutdown affect your timeline for making a major purchase, such as a car or a home? (Table)\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The majority (57%) say the shutdown has caused no impact to their timeline for making a major purchase, down from 65% a month ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Nearly half of Americans say the shutdown has had a negative impact on their lives<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The shutdown\u2019s footprint extends beyond purchases. Nearly half (46%) of Americans say it\u2019s having a negative impact on their life, with 16% saying it\u2019s having a major negative impact and 30% saying it\u2019s having a minor negative impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"datawrapper-vis-1G3uM\" style=\"min-height: 249px;\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\" defer src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/1G3uM\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" data-target=\"#datawrapper-vis-1G3uM\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/1G3uM\/full.png\" alt=\"What impact is the government shutdown having on your own life? (Bar Chart)\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Half of Americans (50%) say the shutdown has had no impact on their own life.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>35% of Americans are doing worse financially because of the shutdown<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than a third of Americans are doing worse financially because of the government shutdown, including 12% who are doing much worse and 24% who are doing a little worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"datawrapper-vis-U1Yw6\" style=\"min-height: 283px;\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\" defer src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/U1Yw6\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" data-target=\"#datawrapper-vis-U1Yw6\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/U1Yw6\/full.png\" alt=\"To what extent, if any, does the government shutdown affect your personal financial situation? (Bar Chart)\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The majority (61%), however, say the shutdown has had no impact on their personal financial situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>7% of Americans with monthly housing payments have missed a payment in the past three months, while 13% have been late<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 745 respondents with a monthly mortgage or rent payment, about one in five have missed (7%) and\/or been late (13%) to make their housing payment over the past three months.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"datawrapper-vis-fZRcu\" style=\"min-height: 288px;\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\" defer src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/fZRcu\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" data-target=\"#datawrapper-vis-fZRcu\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/fZRcu\/full.png\" alt=\"At any point in the past three months have you missed or been late to make your monthly housing (mortgage or rent) payment? (Table)\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>A third of people who have missed or been late to make housing payments, and who are likely to, cite government shutdown as a direct cause<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 107 respondents who have missed or been late to make monthly housing payments in the past three months, and who are likely to miss or be late in the next three months, 32% say the government shutdown is a direct cause. Another 17% said the shutdown is an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indirect <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause for their missed or late payment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A higher share (37%) say the shutdown is not a reason for their missed or late payment.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"datawrapper-vis-Lr9Vw\" style=\"min-height: 302px;\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\" defer src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/Lr9Vw\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" data-target=\"#datawrapper-vis-Lr9Vw\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/Lr9Vw\/full.png\" alt=\"Is the government shutdown a reason for your late or missed housing payment? (Bar Chart)\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Decreased or delayed income is the most cited reason for missing or being late to make housing payments<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most cited reason for missing or being late to make housing payments (34%)\u2014or being likely to in the next three months (37%)\u2014is a decrease in income or income delays.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"datawrapper-vis-s0p6P\" style=\"min-height: 739px;\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\" defer src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/s0p6P\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" data-target=\"#datawrapper-vis-s0p6P\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/s0p6P\/full.png\" alt=\"Reasons for missing or being late to make monthly housing payments (Table)\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next most cited reason for respondents who have already missed or been late to make payments is emergency expenses or unexpected costs (28%). Increased debt or credit obligations (26%) is the second most cited reason for respondents who expect to miss or be late making their payment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>33% of workers are concerned about their job security<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adding to the effect of a government shutdown and general economic uncertainty, several high-profile companies\u2014including Amazon and UPS\u2014announced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/mass-layoffs-full-list-companies-cutting-thousands-jobs-10957747\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major layoffs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in late October impacting tens of thousands of employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly 33% of workers surveyed said they are concerned about their job security\u2014virtually unchanged from Redfin\u2019s August<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/survey-job-security-2025\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> job security survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (31%).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"datawrapper-vis-jHPak\" style=\"min-height: 401px;\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\" defer src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/jHPak\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" data-target=\"#datawrapper-vis-jHPak\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/jHPak\/full.png\" alt=\"How do you feel about your job security today? (Table)\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The majority (61%) of employed survey respondents say they were confident about their job security, including 41% who are very confident and 20% who are somewhat confident. Those numbers were also similar to August\u2019s results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the workers who <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concerned about their jobs, tariffs (21%) and government restructuring (20%) are the most cited reasons for the concern.
