The same effect took hold in Florida during hurricane season. In both instances, the bump in user engagement was short-lived.<\/i><\/strong><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">House hunters on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/redfin.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redfin.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are more likely to click into the climate-risk section of home listings when major natural disasters hit, but it doesn\u2019t take long for this effect to fade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 90 days leading up to the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires, Redfin users clicked into the climate-risk section of California home listings 4.2% of the time, on average. On January 8\u2014the day after the fires began\u2014that percentage jumped to 5.7%, and on January 12, it peaked at 7.8%. The clickthrough rate fell back to its pre-fire average at the end of March and has hovered around that level since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHumans often have short memories when it comes to natural disasters,\u201d said Redfin Chief Economist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/author\/darylfairweather\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daryl Fairweather<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cA major fire or storm can jolt homebuyers into paying attention to climate risk because the event feels fresh and likely to happen again, but this urgency is fleeting. That\u2019s why local leaders have a small but crucial window after a disaster to educate people on disaster preparedness and resilience. Homeowners should think about natural disasters as an ongoing risk and have an action plan in case catastrophe strikes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"datawrapper-vis-mKNXe\" style=\"min-height: 472px;\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\" defer src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/mKNXe\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" data-target=\"#datawrapper-vis-mKNXe\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/mKNXe\/full.png\" alt=\"California Homebuyers Sought Climate-Risk Data During L.A. Climate-risk information in Redfin home listings is provided by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/firststreet.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First Street<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Clickthrough rates are calculated using the following equation: Total daily unique Redfin.com users who clicked into a risk type (flood, fire, heat, wind or air) within the \u201cClimate\u201d section of a listin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">g during a given time period divided by total unique Redfin.com users who visited the \u201cClimate\u201d section of the listing during the same time period. Redfin analyzed millions of user clicks in 2024 and 2025. Clickthrough rates are typically higher during the weekends, when people have more time to engage in the home-search process. Clicks are measured based on where the property is located, not where the user is located. For example, if a user in Washington, D.C. clicks into the climate-risk section of a property in California, it will count as a click in California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-83120\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Picture1-961x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Picture1-961x1024.png 961w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Picture1-281x300.png 281w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Picture1-768x819.png 768w, https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Picture1.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire, which both tore through Southern California in January, together destroyed over 11,000 residential properties, according to an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-01-16\/mapping-los-angeles-damage-from-the-eaton-and-palisades-fires-altadena-pasadena\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Los Angeles Times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than two-thirds (67.6%) of U.S. residents say living in a place with low risk of natural disaster is non-negotiable, according to a Redfin-commissioned survey of 4,000 respondents conducted by Ipsos in May 2025. But the reality is that many people live in these places anyway, often because they want to be close to family or found a home they love. This may be starting to shift, though; more people <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/climate-migration-real-estate-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out of than into flood-prone America for the first time since 2019 last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Homebuyer Engagement With Climate-Risk Data Also Spiked During Hurricane Season<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nHomebuyer engagement with climate-risk data also surged in Florida during the 2024 hurricane season, which included Hurricane Helene in late September and Hurricane Milton in early October.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 90 days leading up to Hurricane Helene, Redfin users <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clicked into the climate-risk section of Florida home listings 8% of the time, on average. By Sept. 29, 2024\u2014three days after the storm made landfall in Florida\u2019s Big Bend region\u2014the clickthrough rate had increased to 9.4%. It peaked at 16.3% on Oct. 7, the same day a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/weather-news\/article293591064.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flood watch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was issued for all of South Florida ahead of Hurricane Milton. Many cities declared states of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/miami\/news\/south-florida-states-of-emergency-flooding-heavy-rain-hurricane-milton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emergency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Hurricane Helene was the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coast.noaa.gov\/states\/fast-facts\/hurricane-costs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deadliest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hurricane to hit mainland America since Hurricane Katrina, and Hurricane Milton was one of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/data\/tcr\/AL142024_Milton.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strongest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic basin.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"datawrapper-vis-lmXIC\" style=\"min-height: 472px;\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\" defer src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/lmXIC\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" data-target=\"#datawrapper-vis-lmXIC\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/lmXIC\/full.png\" alt=\"In Florida, Homebuyer Engagement With Climate-Risk Data Drops Off Quickly After Hurricanes (Line chart)\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nFlorida\u2019s clickthrough rate fell back to its pre-Helene average in mid-October 2024 and has hovered around that level since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina were also impacted by these storms, but saw relatively small jumps in homebuyer engagement with climate-risk data.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>National Clickthrough Rate Also Rose in Response to Hurricanes, Wildfires\u2014But the Increase Was Less Dramatic<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nThe 2024 hurricane season and the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires both fueled increases in the national clickthrough rate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nationally, Redfin users clicked on the climate-risk section of home listings 3.3% of the time the week before Hurricane Helene. That percentage started rising the week Hurricane Helene made landfall and peaked at 4.1% the week Hurricane Milton made landfall. It fell back to pre-Helene levels the week beginning October 21, 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"datawrapper-vis-BKV9K\" style=\"min-height: 471px;\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\" defer src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/BKV9K\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" data-target=\"#datawrapper-vis-BKV9K\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/BKV9K\/full.png\" alt=\"Homebuyers More Likely to Click Climate Info After Disasters Hit (Line chart)\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nSimilarly, the national clickthrough rate increased from 3.5% the week before the Los Angeles wildfires to 3.9% the week of the fires. It fell back to pre-fire levels the week beginning March 24, 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It took roughly three months for the clickthrough rate to return to \u201cnormal\u201d after the fires started burning, but it took less than one month for it to return to \u201cnormal\u201d after the two major hurricanes in 2024. This may be because Floridians are more accustomed to major disasters than many Californians, for whom the January fires came as a shock. Wildfires are much harder to predict than hurricanes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The national clickthrough rate also climbed slightly around the Fourth of July this year, when destructive flooding shocked Central Texas, killing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/24\/us\/camp-mystic-texas-flooding-girls-kerrville-hnk#:~:text=Two%20months%20after%20catastrophic%20flooding,where%20their%20loved%20one%20is.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people at a Christian youth camp. It was 3.3% the week of the floods, and had risen to a peak of 3.6% by mid-July.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;While the increases in the national clickthrough rate are small, they are meaningful,&#8221; said Redfin Senior Economist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/author\/yingqi-xuredfin-com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yingqi Xu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &#8220;It&#8217;s clear that the spike in Florida\u2019s clickthrough rate during hurricane season and the spike in California\u2019s clickthrough rate during the Los Angeles fires drove increases in the national clickthrough rate. The national uptick is more muted because it includes the behavior of house hunters in other states who weren\u2019t affected by disasters. This indicates that natural disasters primarily impact the behavior of people searching for homes near the disaster zone\u2014not those searching in other areas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The national clickthrough rate stood at 3.2% as of the end of October 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s worth noting that many Redfin users likely don\u2019t feel the need to click into the climate-risk section because they find the preview of this section sufficient\u2014one reason clickthrough rates may appear low.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year (2024) was the fourth-costliest disaster year on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/blogs\/beyond-data\/2024-active-year-us-billion-dollar-weather-and-climate-disasters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">record<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with roughly $183 billion in disaster costs, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). There were 27 events with damages of at least $1 billion, trailing only 2023, which had 28.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>House Hunters in Mississippi and Louisiana Are Most Likely to Click into Risk Data<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nRedfin users clicked into the climate-risk section of Mississippi home listings 9.6% of the time in the third quarter\u2014the highest clickthrough rate of any state. Next came Louisiana (9.2%), Vermont (8.9%), West Virginia (8.3%) and Florida (7.2%). The lowest clickthrough rates were in Washington, D.C. (2.4%), Nevada (3.2%), Nebraska (3.3%), Minnesota (3.4%) and Arizona (3.4%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mississippi and Louisiana are the two most vulnerable states in the Climate Vulnerability Index, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/map.climatevulnerabilityindex.org\/map\/cvi_overall\/mississippi?mapBoundaries=County&amp;mapFilter=0&amp;reportBoundaries=County&amp;geoContext=State\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ranking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Environmental Defense Fund and Texas A&amp;M University. Both states are prone to hurricanes and tornados, and were devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Louisiana and Mississippi rank in the top three when it comes to per-capita disaster losses over the past 45 years, according to an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/msindy.org\/p\/jeopardized-federal-climate-database\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Mississippi Independent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Louisiana has particularly high homeowner\u2019s insurance costs, in part due to high flood and storm risk. That may be one reason people searching for homes there are more likely to click into the climate-risk section of listings, as this section includes disaster insurance cost estimates. The average annual cost of homeowner\u2019s insurance in Louisiana was $10,964 in 2024\u2014higher than every state but Florida and up 38% from the year before. Insurify <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/insurify.com\/homeowners-insurance\/report\/home-insurance-price-projections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">projects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that will increase another 27% to $13,937 by the end of this year\u2014the biggest increase of any state. By comparison, the average cost nationally is expected to be $3,520\u00a0 by the end of 2025. Many Louisiana homeowners also buy separate flood insurance policies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe high cost of homeowner\u2019s insurance in Louisiana is limiting people\u2019s ability to afford homes,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/real-estate-agents\/jason-gale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jason Gale<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/premier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redfin Premier<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> real estate agent in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/city\/14233\/LA\/New-Orleans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Orleans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cA lot of homebuyers have backed out of deals because they couldn\u2019t find insurance that fit their budget. It\u2019s critical that buyers find lenders that understand the nuance of their market because you don\u2019t want to end up in a situation where your lender quotes you $150 a month for insurance and the actual cost ends up being $500.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Orleans Parish, where New Orleans is located, 99.1% of homes face high flood risk\u2014the highest share of any county Redfin <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/climate-migration-real-estate-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analyzed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gale said homebuyers can often assume the seller\u2019s existing flood-insurance policy, allowing them to save time and money, but this isn\u2019t the case with homeowner\u2019s insurance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>State-Level Clickthrough Rates: Q3 2025 vs Q3 2024<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nNote: We use quarterly data when ranking clickthrough rates by state because it\u2019s more stable than daily and weekly data.
