Please see the end of this report for more on methodology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI has dominated headlines as rapid advances <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citriniresearch.com\/p\/2028gic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stoke fears<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that it could automate a significant share of white-collar jobs. Some estimates suggest up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chase.com\/personal\/investments\/learning-and-insights\/article\/tmt-february-twenty-twenty-six?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30% of U.S. jobs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could be displaced, with 80% of workers affected in some way, fueling anxiety about income stability. Uncertainty around the future of the labor market could also contribute to volatile mortgage rates, adding another hurdle for prospective homebuyers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, that worst-case scenario <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chase.com\/personal\/investments\/learning-and-insights\/article\/tmt-february-twenty-twenty-six?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isn\u2019t reflected<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the data. But cracks are starting to show: February\u2019s jobs report was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/february-2026-jobs-report\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weaker than expected<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; some commentators say that\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2026\/03\/06\/dont_blame_ai_for_unemployment_yet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">partly due<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to some companies cutting jobs in favor of investing in AI. Still, the unemployment rate remains fairly low.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Democrats, Republicans Agree That AI Could Hurt Housing Affordability\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broken down by political party, just over three in five (63%) Democrats say advances in AI will eliminate jobs and make it harder to afford homes. Just under three in five (57%) Republicans say the same thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Most Americans Say Tariffs Will Keep Inflation and Rates High\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redfin also asked how other factors are impacting how people think about housing affordability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly two-thirds (65%) of U.S. residents believe tariffs will cause inflation and keep interest rates high. Three in 10 (31%) say tariffs will help boost the U.S. economy, helping more people afford to buy homes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"datawrapper-vis-B22vC\" style=\"min-height: 756px;\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\" defer src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/B22vC\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" data-target=\"#datawrapper-vis-B22vC\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/B22vC\/full.png\" alt=\"54% of Republicans, 20% of Democrats Believe Tariffs Will Boost Economy, Helping Affordability (Grouped Bars)\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Trump\u2019s tariffs have unsettled would-be homebuyers since he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/crs-product\/R48549\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">introduced them<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last year. An April 2025 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/survey-tariffs-major-purchase\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redfin survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found 24% of Americans canceled plans for a major purchase like a home or car because of tariffs, and 32% delayed them. Policy changes have added to the uncertainty. After the U.S. Supreme Court <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/2026\/02\/supreme-court-strikes-down-tariffs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">struck down<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> part of the tariffs in late February, the president quickly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cn93e12rypgo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reinstated new ones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through a different mechanism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Americans Are Split on Immigration\u2019s Impact on Housing\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also asked people how rules and regulations around immigration will help or hurt housing affordability:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than half (52%) say less immigration will result in fewer construction workers and fewer new homes, driving up home prices.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the flip side, 35% say less immigration will reduce demand for housing, making it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affordable.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Trump has pursued <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/17\/us\/immigration-policies-us-history-timeline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stricter immigration policies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> centered on tightening border security, expanding deportations and reducing certain legal immigration pathways.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked about zoning, nearly half (47%) of U.S. residents say less restrictive rules around building and zoning will help make homes more affordable, while 19% disagree with that sentiment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many state and local politicians support loosening zoning laws to make it easier to build homes, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionowners.com\/news\/whitmer-pushes-housing-reform?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the governors of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Illinois. Some lawmakers oppose such a change, arguing it would undermine neighborhood character and allow taller, denser housing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Democrats and Republicans differ on beliefs about how tariffs, immigration and zoning laws will impact housing affordability. For instance, 79% of Democrats say tariffs will cause inflation and keep interest rates high, compared to 51% of Republicans. And Republicans are far more likely to believe that less immigration will ultimately make housing more affordable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Methodology<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The survey results in this report are from a Redfin-commissioned survey conducted by Ipsos in November 2025, fielded to 4,000 U.S. residents.
