Please see the end of this report for more on methodology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. has more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.datacentermap.com\/usa\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3,000 AI data centers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with thousands more in development as demand for AI surges. They\u2019re controversial <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.uab.edu\/humanrights\/2025\/10\/02\/construction-and-consequences-the-human-impacts-of-artificial-intelligence-data-centers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">largely because<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they strain electricity and water resources, which increases energy costs, sparks environmental concerns and disrupts nearby communities with noise and large, industrial structures.\u00a0 They also tap into broader fears about AI: Roughly three in five U.S. residents believe AI will eliminate jobs, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/survey-ai-fears-housing-affordability\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">same Redfin survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fielded by Ipsos. At the same time, AI data centers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/businessintexas.com\/blog\/how-data-centers-benefit-texas-communities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can create well-paying jobs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in fields like IT and security, support local construction employment and spur investment in energy and water infrastructure\u2013potentially boosting struggling areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of local residents are frustrated about the surge in data centers in our community,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/real-estate-agents\/hazelshakur\">Hazel Shakur<\/a>, a Redfin Premier agent who sells homes primarily in Prince George\u2019s County, MD. \u201cThere are already <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2026\/01\/01\/data-centers-prince-georges-county\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five data centers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in our county, with another one planned at the site of what was once a popular mall. People are questioning whether county officials are trading long-term community vision and quality of life for projects that may not directly benefit the people who live here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Younger Americans More Likely to Support AI Data Centers in Their Backyards<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gen Zers (48%) and millennials (50%) are more likely than Gen Xers (38%) and baby boomers (22%) to support data centers in their backyard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broken down by political preference, roughly half (49%) of Republicans support the construction of an AI data center in their neighborhood, compared with 36% of Democrats. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"datawrapper-vis-RSSvH\" style=\"min-height: 439px;\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\" defer src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/RSSvH\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" data-target=\"#datawrapper-vis-RSSvH\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/RSSvH\/full.png\" alt=\"Gen Z, Millennials More Likely Than Older Americans to Support Data Centers in Their Neighborhood (Bar Chart)\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><noscript><br data-mce-bogus=\"1\"><\/noscript><\/p>\n<h3><b>AI Data Centers Face More Neighborhood Pushback Than Apartment Complexes<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Americans are slightly more likely to oppose data centers in their neighborhood than any other type of building we asked about. Nearly half (47%) of U.S. residents oppose construction of a data center near their home; almost as many (46%) oppose converting single-family homes into smaller, multi-unit dwellings to increase housing supply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just over two-thirds (37%) of respondents oppose building a new apartment complex in their neighborhood, while 31% oppose a new mixed-use development nearby.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"datawrapper-vis-0JkQ5\" style=\"min-height: 398px;\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\" defer src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/0JkQ5\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" data-target=\"#datawrapper-vis-0JkQ5\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/0JkQ5\/full.png\" alt=\"Americans Are More Likely to Oppose AI Data Centers Than Other Building Types (Bar Chart)\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><b>Methodology<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The survey results in this report are from a Redfin-commissioned survey conducted by Ipsos in November 2025, fielded to 4,000 U.S. residents. The results for this combined group of survey respondents have a credibility interval of +\/-1.9 percentage points. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This report focuses on a question about how respondents feel about building certain types of properties in their neighborhoods. The building types are listed in the chart in the final section of this report. Respondents could select \u201cstrongly support,\u201d \u201csomewhat support,\u201d \u201cstrongly oppose,\u201d \u201csomewhat oppose,\u201d or \u201cno opinion.\u201d For this report, we combined
