So Lauren herself was very good to work with, and this review is more of her company than of Lauren, with whom I was pleased to work.
But Better Mortgage was frustrating. Everything went very smoothly on the front end: their website is terrific for exploring different financing options, and Lauren was helpful and responsive.
Once we were under contract with a locked in rate, however, responsibilities transitioned to their processing team and the company became very frustrating to work with. Their processing department misunderstood Fannie guidelines and attempted to make us pay for an $800 annual liability insurance policy for our entire condominium, a policy which was completely unnecessary (we had to learn the Fannie guidelines ourselves to demonstrate to them that they were wrong). They ordered the appraisal extremely late, causing us not to receive an appraisal until after the option period was over. And they were extremely unreliable about returning calls and emails.
We got an excellent rate from them, so in the end choosing them was worth all of the difficulty along the way. I would certainly recommend including Better in your comparison shopping and wouldn't discourage anyone from going with them if their terms are the best available. But just know that you may be signing yourself up for a few weeks of intense frustration, and that you would be very wise to proactively engage in the process to keep things moving forward.
