Driving through the sublime streets of Fairfield, one might have to do a double take when passing Stone Wall. A federally protected landmark in the town’s original Historic District, this stately home was publicly described by the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities as “the finest example of Greek Revival Architecture in Connecticut”. And yet its two-story Doric columns, which stand sentinel on either side of the home’s intricately carved front door, are not what catch the eye at first for you can hardly see them from the street. The fieldstone wall which lends the property its name stands tall enough that anyone passing by on the sidewalk would have to stand on their tip toes to peer over. The story behind the wall is simple; built to protect the homeowners from the dust of horse drawn carriages passing along this New York to Boston route, it consists of the stones of an original 17th century blockhouse. The original dwelling at Stone Wall burnt to the ground along with much of Fairfield when the British sacked the town in 1779, although it was quickly and defiantly rebuilt. As the Greek Revival architectural style swept New England in 1825, the home found its current façade. For all of this history, Stone Wall is hardly stuck in the past.
