The clubhouse with the sunny patio overlooking the pool is a favorite place to gather on Friday evening. It is almost like living at a country club. Don't miss this condo. It is truly a gem.
Legend Hill offers just the right combination of relaxing lifestyle & convenience. It is an idyllic spot with beautiful views of both Long Island Sound and the rolling hills of Connecticut. The condominiums are exceptionally designed, comfortable, quiet and laid out to maximize the natural surroundings. This is a fabulous location being only 45 minutes by car to Hartford, and an hour to Bradley Int'l Airport. The shoreline rail service can have you in New York or Boston within a couple of hours. Downtown Madison, boating, marinas, and several sandy beaches are also just a short drive away making the Legends location fabulous. And there is so much to do. There are two tennis courts, an in-ground pool with patio areas and bathrooms with showers and changing areas. The club house is spectacular. It was built in 1928 by Russell C Northam, a wealthy stock and bond broker from Hartford. He purchased nearly 100 acres of land and hired the architectural firm Isaac Allen and Sons to design a spacious French farmhouse of stone to sit on the beautiful site overlooking Long Island Sound. The mansion is said to have played a role in rum running during prohibition. Ships were guided by hi-powered red and green spotlights behind the 4th story attic windows. The ships would drop the liquor in the water and rum-runner boats would speed out to pick up the goods and return to the Northam mansion which had a trap door and a tunnel leading to an enormous vault in the basement. This continued until Prohibition ended in 1933. Russell Northam's daughter, Barbara married Milburn Palin. They raised their family in the stone mansion. During WWII the mansion was used as a raid spotting station. In 1955 after Milburn retired as sales manager of Frankfort Distillery, they sold the mansion and land to the Heflin Family. The Sisk’s also lived there briefly. In 1960 Peter C Hodgson purchased the property. Peter was the inventor of Silly Putty. In 1979 a few years after Hodgson's death, the mansion and 88 acres were sold by his estate to a developer. 90 condominiums were constructed and the development was called Legend Hill. The Northam mansion and garage remain as the recreation center for the condominium association. Some of this came from "The History of North Madison, Connecticut" by Merritt W Cleaver.
