Lordship is a small, waterfront community situated on Connecticut’s Gold Coast in Stratford, Connecticut. Lordship is an island bounded by salt marshes to the north and Long Island Sound to the south. The neighborhood is a peninsula on Long Island Sound and is accessible by only two roads. Short Beach Park is located adjacent to the mouth of the Housatonic River, and is an excellent example of multiple use planning that provides recreation for citizens of all ages. The northernmost section provides handicapped access to the beach as well as least tern and piping plover nesting areas. Fisherman also use the marine basin to fish for snapper bluefish during the summer months and, also, to catch bait fish. As you move south along the beach, you will find picnic areas, a calisthenics course, a playground, and, of course, Stratford's largest sandbox! Additional recreational areas provided at the complex include a golf course, softball fields, and courts for basketball, paddleball, tennis, and volleyball. The southernmost section is used to provide sailboard lessons. A concession stand/shower is located on the beach. This is also the site of many outdoor concerts and the Independence Day fireworks. Short Beach Golf Course is located at the entrance of Short Beach Park. The nine-hole par-3 layout has a distinct shoreline flavor, with spectacular views of Long Island Sound from most holes. Long Beach, located at the end of Oak Bluff Road, is approximately 1.5 miles in length, and provides a public beach area for bathing, sailboarding, and fishing. The middle sections of Long Beach are maintained as shorebird nesting areas. Russian Beach, known locally as 'Lordship Beach', is located on Park Blvd in the Lordship section of town. The name 'Russian Beach' comes from its historical use by Russian immigrants employed at Igor Sikorsky’s Manufacturing Company. Russian Beach is believed to be one of the few natural beaches in Connecticut this is expanding in a seaward direction resulting in a series of dunes. If you like living on or near the beach in a community that is close to I-95, Metro North, the Port Jefferson NY ferry, and the Sikorsky Memorial Airport, then Lordship is the place for you.
