Redroof Design of New York was commissioned to create a simple, modern house out of an old barn, while retaining the essential charm of the barn. The architect Yann Weymouth, who since went on to serve as chief of design for I.M. Pei on the Louvre Pyramid in Paris, and recently designed the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburgh, Florida, had a 150+ year old onion barn from Westport disassembled and reconstructed around and through a modern house. The original wide plank pine floors as well as the chestnut post and beams are incorporated in the modern interior. The rooms are oriented so as to maximize the use of the light: Bedrooms face East for the morning sun, the dining room faces West to capture the sunset, and the large, open, two-story living area faces South for the daylight hours in between. The wrap around deck leads the indoor space to include the outdoor areas. Originally, the roof of the exterior structure only had rafters. However, the second owner decided to add shingles to the roof, and the current owner added steel beams to reinforce the structure to support the load bearing roof over the winter months. In the summer months, the exterior structure acts as a heat- and weather-shielding umbrella. The original structure has further been expanded to have two above grade bedrooms and a family room in the lower level, as well as a two-car garage, which also contains an apartment with full bath, sleeping loft, and kitchenette, a workshop, and a upstairs studio, connected to the main floor of the main house. The hillside placement of the house is designed to capture open, tree-top, expansive views. The unique architectural character of the house, as well as its hill-top placement, is a never-ending source of interest and inspiration.
